FOR A LONG TIME we have wondered when Nvidia's abject stupidity would have a price. The answer, at least at Dell, is now.
If you go over the Dell desktop lineup and look through the customization options, you will see that, with a few minor exceptions, there are no more Nvidia cards being offered in Dell systems. Whoopsie. I guess the $10M that Nvidia paid Dell wasn't enough to make amends.
The lone remaining desktop Dells with Nvidia graphics are in the high end XPS line and some All-In-One (AIW) models. The AIWs and laptops have a lot in common. They have longer design cycles, and Dell can't just swap out graphics parts when things go pear shaped with a particular supplier. What the systems were designed for years earlier is what they have to be shipped with, and what those models will stay with until they are replaced.
On the non-AIW desktop side, there isn't a single Nvidia card in a Dell machine that I could find other than in the XPS line. Gone, poof, almost overnight. The high-end gaming boxes are where Nvidia theoretically should shine. Its image hasn't been as tarnished among the fanboi set to the degree it has elsewhere.
That said, there are three lines of XPS machines, the 625, the 630, and the 730, each with four sub-models. The 625 line is entirely devoid of Nvidia cards, but Dell offers multiple ATI graphics card configurations, including several versions of CrossfireX. One of the four 630 models has no Nvidia graphics option, two of the remaining ones have more ATI choices than Nvidia options, and the fourth has two from each vendor.
On the top of the heap in the 730 models, where Nvidia has traditionally dominated, one 730 model has no Nvidia option at all while the others offer cards from both graphics vendors about equally. Nvidia is hanging on by its fingernails on the high end, likely because of gaming fanbois more than anything else.
This is nothing less than a sea change at Dell. Nvidia has basically been shown the door by Dell in a most unceremonious fashion. Nvidia either decided to stop buying market share, or Dell just got fed up with it, but don't preclude both.
From what we hear, Dell's laptops and AIWs aren't far behind either. The decisions at Dell and elsewhere are all starting to sound like a broken record. Look for other OEMs to follow suit shortly. The decisions for back to school models get made in the next four to six weeks, and after that point it is basically game over for the year.
Nvidia is looking at openly hostile OEM customers and trying to woo them without any DX11 parts. ATI will have DX11 parts in the pipeline very shortly, and it is being greeted with open arms. Payback is a bitch. µ
Oh, btw...

O RLY?
NO-MORE-NVIDIA-CARDS-MY-ASS
get your facts straight.
Payback is a bitch.
Do you have any sources besides your conspiracy theory that nvidia is out at dell?
All your articles regarding Nvidia are written with arrogance and malice.
Charlie, you really are a douchebag.
Well, that's half the story. The nVidia half. Perhaps Charlie would be so good as to run down ATI's past legion of mistakes and miscues. I won't even begin to go through the problems faced by people using ATI drivers over the years. If that's now a part of history and no longer current, I applaud them, but that still doesn't wipe out their past. Or, at least it shouldn't, if Charlie is being honest(?).
ATI spent years being a follower, instead of a leader. Then it failed to the point where AMD bought them. With competent engineers nearby, perhaps they're beginning to learn...
...you suck....
so called journalist :))))))
get a grip man,
not a nvidia/ibm employee
...who the hell needs Dell when you got Cuda..
Don't tell Charlie, but Dell just launched some more laptops with Charlies favourite chipset in (9400M/Ion that is)

AMD and Anti-Competitive Practices
5/27/2009 by: Sean Kalinich
http://brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/5/27/amd-and-anti-competitive-practices.aspx
and ATI fanboys always says NVIDIA gpu charge too much… Of course they can.
Nvidia is able to command a premium cause people want their gpu. If people don’t want it, then nvidia would not be able to command a premium for their products. Look at the ATI’s 4800 series… They bought competition by pricing it right and nvidia had to quickly lower the price on their card too.
And why are people whining that nvidia fastest gpu is too pricey. Of course it will be and can be. It is new and has their latest tech. You should pay a premium for the latest tech if you cannot wait a few months for a price drop.
How come no-one ever complain when AMD or Intel release a new top of the line CPU. "Omg, I want the extreme cpu but that company charges way too much… " those people (fanboys) are just hypocrites.
I am all for competition and having choice. Charlie is a hit and miss with more miss than hit. If you say he isn't bias on his articles... I can't help you with that.
Nvidia out at Dell? Really?
Then what is this???
New NVIDIA-Powered Dell Laptop Features Killer HD Video and Gaming To Go

What I like about Charlie is,everytime he lights a bonfire, everyone comes along & pisses on it,lol.
i don't care what dell would do with their new products, and i'm just hoping that i can swap this fxxking nvidia GPU for an ati GPU in my laptop, but i know it's impossible...
Nvidia will be dead in 18 months or so,
as soon as they see they are going to loose all the lawsuits against them
???
I still see NVIDIA options for video cards even in the Optiplex line.

I have built 100s of computers last year with nvidia gpus. from the top to bottom. I warranty free repair on all products for their manufacturer warranty time. NOT ONE CARD WENT OUT! Its so funny how all your links to "proof" of your case lead to other articles that YOU wrote. Thats it, YOU KEEP MAKING STUFF UP. There is no proof for what this guy is saying. I wouldve went out of business if 10% of his claim were true
It was less than a year ago when Palit-owned Gainward dropped a bomb by deciding to give up its Nvidia exclusivity and start making Radeons, and now, the word on the interweb is that the company will get back to offering only Nvidia-powered graphics cards. Although it released quite a few interesting Radeon HD 4000 series cards, Gainward has not joined the crowd of board partners to have Radeon HD 4890 or HD 4770 cards and apparently it has already notified some distributors about discontinuing its AMD/ATI line-up.
Gainward is said to announce the move back into Nvidia's more or less loving arms very soon.

The truth shall set you free.
http://charliedemerjianisadouchebag.blogspot.com/
Here we go again, poor Charlie is talking bollocks again. I've just spec. a Dell Studio desktop with a GeForce 9800GT on the site that he can't find any Nvidia cards bar the ones he's mentioned. Hang on, according to him the GT295 wasn't going to exist either, and it was for reviewers only, & yet Novatech for one have several to buy...Maybe cos it both outperforms his beloved ATI's 4870X2 & uses less power isn't a fact that he wants to report since he has his head so far up ATi's arse. Gimme Toms Harware anyday, its a site that reports facts, not Charlies fantasies..
Where did you get your notebooks design comment from Chuck? I know that Dell simply buys chassis from the likes of Compal/Bizcom, Uniwell, et al. I know my company can get notebooks from both (and other) vendors with ATI graphics if we want, right NOW.
Just sayin mate, you might want to think about that. Doesn't matter if the plastic says Dell because it wasn't designed there. They supply the rough specs to the manufacturers and agree to buy X thousand units and therein get the Dell logo / colors on the casing design.
FYI this "design" situation goes for a majority of other vendors, not just Dell. There aren't too many notebook makers in the world...
I'm still pissed about nVidia lying about WMV on NV40 and then erasing all their pre-release specs to cover up a non-functioning programmable VPU. NVidia, under Jen Tsun Wanker, has been a complete failure. How this man still has his job I cannot understand.
...And your answer shows by itself that you have no idea what does an engineer in any those fields you even suggested. Absolutely nothing personal, just factual.
Ew... defend my title? I don't need to do that! Fortunate enough, in my field recession means "growth"! I just had a laugh at that comment and felt like having my take.
This IS the INQUIRER... "facts, news and FRICTION". I saw this place come to life (was it in 2001?) and I still hang around here to have a good time.
Anyway, being this the inquirer, I personally believe that my comment was perfectly appropiate.
PS: Charlie, you're a complete nutter, but you sometimes you get the truth right and kick the balls of those who hate you. You're awesome and one of the reasons I keep comming back for more!
Someone doesn't like the fact that other people can be 'engineers'..
'Engineer' may have nothing do with repairing PCs. He could be a software engineer, a military engineer, hell a fricking train engineer.
Did you even post any content, or just try to defend your precious title?
I've had an nVidia video card and an nVidia motherboard fail in the last couple years. I haven't used their parts since.
Fujitsu and NEC (Called PackardBell here) die the same rate as Dell.
The least systems I see are Acer and HP.
The most after PackardBell are Medion and Asus.
And funny, most of them with Intel rubbish inside.
Few of them with VIA and nVidia.
But so far I have seen NONE with AMD/ATI chipset failures.
You sir do not work in computer repairs, else you would have known better.
Very good!
nVidia blasted out of the way, after years of cheating and deception they are being ignored!
They managed to kill a lot op opponents in the Gaming area...but not ATI!!
YES!! The get a cookie of their own medicine.
nVidia is finally getting what they deserve for a long time! Bankruptcy!!
ATI never ever played dirty tricks, nor Matrox and others....nVidia did!
I can't wait until they are vanished...CROOKS!
A G8200M failed on me, six months ago a G84 failed on me. That would amount to 100% of nvidia driven laptops in my life.
So, you are an "engineer" and what you do is "repair and build" PC's...
It smells like somebody is trying to give himself so "extra" importance and "qualifications".
I repair and build our companies PC's and the most common ones to fail are DELLS! Our Fujitsu and NEC's keep on trucking but DELLS just love to fail after 13 months. As for this bump scandal, odd as most of our failures are either mother board failures or ATI chipset failures. Yet to have any of the new Nvidia systems fail.
Enjoy spreading your opinion, but don't think DELL is putting customers first, they are maximising profits by restricting range to sell off stock in between the product range change.
It is all about the bottom line. Not which chip manufacturer you want to marry!
... ATI video as the default option. This was one of the primary deciding factors when buying this laptop. It was a good decision. It was a good decision since the laptop and drivers have been quite good - video and battery performance and reliability. The fact that the Dell Studio line offered ATI by default speaks to the fact that it's perceived by Dell as reliable since that will be the highest quantity shipped (and lowest overall cost, remember, they are in the business of making money.)
Thanks to Charlie and bumpgate, I don't have to worry about the video card crapping out on me as soon as the (extended) warranty expires!
ati still don't do a freebsd driver, once they get that I will finally be able to use my 4870 in anger
People always groan and moan about ATI drivers, have they actually used them lately?
My 4770 is running insanely well in Ubuntu 64bit with the Catalyst 9.5 drivers. In fact, much better than my sisters NVIDIA 8400 card which is a constant pain.
Same with 64bit Windows 7, 9.5 is fantastic.
Before you jump on the ATI drivers suck bandwagon try 'em yourself.
Midnight Sniper (or should I say, Jen Hsun's b**ch?): Charlie calls 'em the way the facts play out. Like I've said earlier, if Charlie was libeling, your daddy would have had his lawyers after him and the INQ long ago. So stop your prissy whinging.
Anon, you in that time of the month again?
All you drooling greentards, get your heads out of your rectums.
HAHA @ the Fanbois
But being serious - I've seen Charlie get things wrong a lot but in Business if you were getting supplied unreliable parts from a supplier you would drop them eventually or reduce the amount you order till A) you phase them out or B) Nvidia sorts it self out Charlie ends up happy and buys Nvidia Graphics cards.
Bearing in mind there is no smoke without fire, pigs don't fly, Charlie isn't the only one writing Nvidia is going down in flames and Intel has annouced in real press/news that it is aiming for expansion into high end graphics.
Where do you guys/fanbois honestly see Dell Going?
Charlie's soo funny, isn't he ma'
I've been running Win 7 Beta since release with a HD4870.
No ATI Win 7 video drivers then, so had to use Vista drivers. When Win 7 drivers came out, started using them.
Guess what? Never had an issue, games work great and not a graphical glitch to be seen.
I also haven't had many problems with ATI products and Linux, but maybe I've been lucky.
People keep going on about ATI issues, and for a long time they kept me on the green side, but since I switched I haven't looked back and haven't had a regret.
Not just XPS, but the studio desktop models appear to have a 9800GT option.
One man's truth is another man's lie...
or
The Truth is out there...
or finally, to quote Terry Pratchett in HogFather.
"The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head."
We love you big man - PLEASE keep exposing the truth - we're all right behind you !!!
All the boys were singing your praises down at Chequers Pizza and Ribs on Friday night
Me? I went with the large pepperoni (down from $14.99 to just $9.99 as a limited edition special), while Jen Hsun and Henry tucked into the ribs $14.99) which, seriously, does feed two people (ribs, salad and arse biscuits). Just so you know. the ribs come without sauce; they give it to you on the side. I think it's so you can better see how perfectly they're done. They were cooked to a mahogany brown that produced a wonderful crunchy crust on the outside.
Nothing better than a Chequers & Charlie dinner as far as we are concerned - we love it !
Charlie, do you really think that a company with the morals of dell would give a hoot if the graphics card dies 6 months out of warranty?
Oh no lets by a new one
what a retailer nightmare
I am a loyal nVidia user, have been using nVidia vid card since they bought Voodoo. And its really hard to turn away a customer like me. And you know what, since this story broke out, I have already bought 4 ATi cards for my PCs, and I picked 4870 for my shiny new Mac Pro.
You can spin all you want, but spinning won't get anywhere near our pocket where the cash is.
If so, read here:
http://www.puissance-pc.net/cartes-graphiques/gainward-arreterait-les-cartes-ati.html?Itemid=49
Gainward is going back to nVidia only products.
I guess you missed that one, eh Charlie?
You keep this up Charlie & you will end up being 'Certified' for your obsessive behaviour towards NVidia.
Why can't you get it drummed into your infitesimally small bird brain, that NVidia rules-OK!!!!!
Hey Nvidia fan boys, I repair laptops for a living and can tell you that at least one of the ones that come in for repair every week has this Nvidia graphics issue! I've seen it across Dell, HP, Sony Toshiba and Acer laptops all with Nvidia GPU's. So at the frontline this is really a major issue and there are a lot of pissed off laptop owners out there not blaming Nviida but the laptop makers!
@ Bruce. I had two 8600M die in 17-inch MacBook Pro and one of my colleagues had the 8600M die in his 15-inch MBP too.
Although both of us were under the extended two-year warranty, I am concerned that the replacements may crap-out again and we'll be left with expensive bricks.
so you must not remember writing about nvidia's dx11 part due out for Windows 7 Chuck?
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1051818/nvidia-gt300-promised-october
Dell has more Ati parts available because Nvidia keeps renaming part instead of launching new ones.
the turnover rate on the chips ati is offering is much greater than the rehashed spins Nvidia is offering so economicaly the Ati cards are gonna cost them less currently.
If that is a result of "bump-gate" or not really isn't Dell's concern but what is, is cost.
That is what in the higher end models you still see Nvidia parts, since that is were the newer parts are like the gtx-275 and gtx-285.
Dell is still selling ati 3450 cards and you would have us believe that they switched to all ATI?
They are clearing stock and have more Ati options than Nvidia sitting on shelves because nvidia last 2-3 series of mainstream parts for laptops and desktops are almost identical.
If anything they will use this as a measure to het better prices on the Nvidia DX11 parts that are supposedly tapping out at the present.
In the end Dell isn't even number 1 in terms of Pc makers anymore, HP is, and Acer is closer to grabbing number one than dell is, not to mention apple which is nvidia from top to bottom for the most part.
Intel will still get more design wins out of ATI and Nvidia combined and somehow you think Dell is above playing one company against the other to clear stock and negotiate pricing ?
You seem to carry far to public a agenda against Nvidia to any longer be considered as objective in the eyes of many readers and in the end that is a big disservice to this site and it's respective readers than somehow thinking exposing "bump-gate" as the worst blunder in the history of chipmaking is a cause in need of you championing .
I'm using Linux as my primary OS about decade. Nvidia is still better supported on Linux. BUT ATI did great when they gone open source. for older (pre 4xxx) it's working good except for HW vedeo acceleration). I do prefer open source since it's more actively developed.
Charlie is another story.
It's just fun to read his posts. You can't take his posts about Nvidia seriously because they are made to look as hostile and untrue as possible. But they are funny:) And some of the responses are funny too :)
..would not lump all their eggs in one basket.
ATI fan boy Charlie is at it again. Dell is simply looking for a cheaper alternative. It's all about the money
Nvidia's latest 64bit driver for Linux works really well, much better then ATI can currently manage. But when ATI sorts their Linux driver out I'll swap.
blah blah blah nvidia is the devil.
What a moron!
So Nvidia shopped around at Chinese fabs and asked them if they could make their new chips cheaper....
Of course, the Chinese fabs claimed they could.
The result is history and Nvidia almost was too. Lawsuits abound.
Remember what happened to IBM's HD biz? Chinese chemical sub-contractor cheated and used a cheaper fire retardant that caused heat cycled chips to seperate and let in O2 which caused the controller to go crazy and the head to gouge the platters. Lawsuits abounded. IBM was forced out of a biz they helped found and dominate for decades.
And how many motherboard companies went under from all the recalls from bad Chinese capacitors due to non-stablized dielectric?
How about the car parts that failed because the Chinese metal contractors were mixing sand into the metal to stretch it?
Don't even get me started on the food. Used industrial grease and oil in human food. Plastic chemicals in baby formula.
I work with people from China. They NEVER buy Chinese stuff.
Why do you employ this bloody idiot? His opinions are facile, his 'journalism' third-rate and he only ha one subject - Nvidia's graphics card.
The Inq used to be a quality operation, bring back McGeek, get rid of this twat and SORT IT OUT
I had two nvidia 8600m's fail on my MacBook Pro. The third time I sent it in Apple sent me a new Unibody MacBookPro. Good on Apple. I am really happy with my new Macbook Pro but it has an Nvidia 9600m and an integrated Nvidia video card! Now I have two Nvidia cards that could fail! I'm getting the longest warranty (3 years) that I can. This Nvidia debacle must have cost Apple $3000-$4000 on my account alone.
You are a warrior of truth, Charlie.
Keep up the great work.
While ATI do make some good cards, there was a problem when I tried win7 beta and now Win7 RC, the ATI card I wanted to use had no drivers that worked for me, and the 512Mb card was seen as a nice little 16Mb generic VGA card. Win XP Pro had no such issues.
I looked at some DELL machines to roll out 10 linux based workstations but had to go with another make as the ATI linux driver(s) did not work for me.
Seriously? All-in-one is AIO. AIW is shorthand for ATI's All-in-WONDER video cards.
ATi B=====D- - -- -Nvidia- - -
