INTEL'S TOP LEGAL EAGLE has admitted that fighting the EU's record anti-trust fine will be tough.
Bruce Sewell, general counsel for Chipzilla, told the company's annual shareholder meeting that Intel expects European courts to agree with the EU's decision and that changing their minds would be an uphill battle.
According to the AP, with a $1.4 billion fine on the table, Chipzilla really has nothing to lose by fighting tooth and nail in every court in Europe.
Intel was found guilty of flogging some of its chips below the cost of making them, and paying retailers and computer makers not to use chips from rival AMD.
Sewell said that Intel had its work cut out for it, but he was hopeful. Still, we guess he will be paid whether it wins or loses. µ

"According to the AP, with a $1.4 billion fine on the table, Chipzilla really has nothing to lose by fighting tooth and nail in every court in Europe."
I always thought that appealing a decision meant you could end up with an even bigger sentence/fine.
Why is it not the case here?
I really think EU wants to become a socialist state. It hates big corporations and most countries in it have sky high taxes. I know Intel shouldn't have done what it did but the fine seems a little excessive. I say this as a European myself.
Intel should pay the fine and bump up prices in Europe accordingly. It's not like there is any decent alternative cpus. ;)
@ Dave
Maybe Intel should pay the fine and leave the EU forever and leave all 700 mil. potential costumers to AMD.
this would be a definite rescue for AMD... and preventing that is a top priority for INTEL, so it is very very very unlikely to happen!
they are just gojng to raise prices, as they are not allowed for incentives/rebating anymore.. ;-)
"this would be a definite _justice_ for AMD..."
There, corrected that for you.
As far as intel raising prices, I'm sure people would be more than happy to buy AMD instead. oh, ;-)
How much of the $$ does AMD get from this or did European bankers just get a huge cash infusion?
AMD do not get any of this fine. It does however open the door for them to sue Intel for damages.
CLEVERLY, THE E.U. OFFSETS IT'S BUDGET DEFICIT FOR 2009
INTEL: LOTS OF MONEY INSIDE.
Next to come: More speedcam, tobacco and cell phone stealth taxation.
Deficit? What deficit? The E.U never had deficit! (only it's people).
Don't get me wrong. I hate Intel and it's monopolistic practices, but fines never were the medium to achieve anything. Intel will keep abusing it's market position, even with the fine. A regulation would be much more effective. The fine was just an instant cashing for the EU. Let me know when a real regulation or law is passed.
Who are you people who defend a company that ripped you off? lol.
Well done European Politicians, at least you are not all bought off like those across the water.
3rd strike for Intel, shouldn't they be getting life? ;-)
SOCIALISM OH NO!!! GEE WILIKERS...
I think the recent news events have been quite the effective rebuttal against free market capitalism. Then again it is a widely held belief that this most recent economic crash was engineered by so called 'free market' bankers.
As for you living in the US and being afraid of Socialism that reads like a Republican talking point. Socialism, let’s see, the following are all government run "socialist" institutions (if you did listen to your poli-sci prof.) Social Security, FAA, FTC, SEC, and the American School System. Now about the last three, if the SEC and FTC were doing their jobs properly when the laws for banking were being unravelled maybe we wouldn’t find ourselves in this mess. Clearly these institutions need to hire more talented people, given more money, and strengthened (oh no, more Socialism.) Oh and the school system in the US, it is also widely known that if you factor out the Ivey league schools (for the ultra rich) that the school system in the US needs money, (with a ranking of 26th globally). Clearly they need more Socialism in this area, even Intel agrees read this:

And about Intel, instead of spending time on lobbying the government on improving the school system they spend time and marketing dollars trying to convince everyone that their Pentium 4 with Net Burst and Hyper Threading is the best thing since sliced bread. Granted their products perform well now, but how can you trust a company that has for over 10 years being doing the same thing? Back then in the Pentium Pro days, they refused to release the 'Overdrive' processor because it would show that their next chip the Pentium II chip was not as good. This seems to be a giant waste the consumer’s, shareholder’s, and stakeholder’s money and time.
Time and time again Intel has chosen the path of Marketing over R&D and engineering. When they are for a particular architecture, they developed it, and saved the processor world with it (64bit, IMC, Visual Computing,) when someone else comes out with it, they portray it like only cavemen could do this. By the way, AMD is not the only other processor company that had these technologies. Most came from companies like DEC Alpha, which of course because Intel could not just simply buy them out (hello FTC 1998) they got Compaq to buy them out then dismantle them. All this makes it seem like the CEO’s care more about short term sales gains and EPS ratios, than long term strength.
Why not instead of spending time and money on dirty market tactics, Intel put the money in ACTUAL research and fixing their product development cycle, instead of manipulating the market, they could keep a keener eye on and make the long term success factors their priority. Granted Intel’s R&D budget is vast, but by playing dirty it appears that the R&D is not their priority. When you have a poor product (Pentium 4) the first thing you need to do is (without bias) figure out where the problems lie and fix them. There is still evidence in Intel that they have these problems and there is plenty of areas that they can work on.
It is very clear that Intel abuses its position and unfortunately slapping them with fines and regulations is, now the only way to get them to take a hard look at themselves.
I am sorry if you bar entry of other competitor’s products, consumers do not get a good product for a lower price, there is no choice, and innovation in the industry as a whole is stifled.
What other industries (aka oligopolies) do you see this in? Hello auto manufacturers. Why are we still paying for gas driven cars when it has been proven that the internal combustion engine has been obsolete for over 60 years? Hmm let me see, it’s those damn socialists!! Or perhaps it’s those big car companies abusing their position to ensure that they control the rate of innovation. Instead of innovate what do they do? Their answer the SUV. The market’s answer, you go bankrupt GM, Chrysler.
Intel, sorry you had to be the example, but hopefully you will not be the last company to get slapped with fines and regulations.
