South Korea bans websites promoting suicide

That should stop people doing it
Thu May 21 2009, 13:23

SOUTH KOREAN LAWMAKERS have voted to ban sites that promote suicide in a bit to stop a spate of people topping themselves.

More than 20 people have decided to end it all in the last week and South Korea thinks it is all to do with the wicked wide web.

The health and welfare ministry will ask Internet portals to ban websites promoting suicide, and to improve their tracking systems to delete any wording encouraging people to kill themselves.

According to the AP, South Korean coppers have arrested three web site operators on charges of abetting suicide.

Of course, making life nicer so people don't want to top themselves is something that a country's politicians would never think of. µ

Which one is the democracy again?

I think the Great Firewall extends a bit past China. Several times in South Korea I've crashed into a government barricade of a website, usually with absolutely no idea why, though one site had news that might have been considered to be too biased in favor of North Korea.

Further evidence of authoritarianness:
My friend has a late-night radio show on one of the several government-owned broadcasting stations. When his upcoming guest was associated with someone who spoke favorably about the candlelight vigil protests during the US beef row last year, the guest was banned from all government-owned media, leaving only one major TV broadcaster. My friend was told that if he revealed why the guest was banned, his show would definitely be canceled, and he would probably be deported.

The Korean Peninsula: two countries, one culture.

They got it all wrong!!

What's wrong with these people? instead of encouraging suicide advice they ban it??
What the heck for? they should promote it, advertise for it, teach children of reading age about it all.
This will help weed out the weak and the defeated.

Stop protecting people from themselves, if they wanna do it, they will. Why not educate them about it? so they can commit suicide efficiently and quickly, hopefully not under a train.

We need people to commit suicide in a green way, so they can lower their carbon footprint, save the mess and get it right the first time.

Does anyone know how much money is wasted on people that FAIL to commit suicide? every government has a responsibility to the tax payers to get this sort of crap under control.

Nothing pisses me off more than people ruining my tube journey because they do not know a better way to take their own lives.

Contemplating suicide? great! do it at your own expense, please do not cause other people grief because you cannot bare the thought of living any more.

Oh, and godspeed to you sir!

Ban the inquirer too!

---Suicide Advice---
The ONLY sure AND painless way to commit suicide is inhaling 100 bottles of Nitrous Oxide.

Nitrous Oxide takes the place of oxygen in your body, but cannot carry oxygen to the brain cells, so brain cells are deprived they much vital to their survival oxygen, and you basically die.

But, since the human body can't tell between oxygen and nitrous oxide, you die painlessly without even noticing it, without the painfully symptoms of monoxide suicide.
---End of Suicide Advice---

Now, can we have the inquirer banned from Korea please?

Stupid governments, they think they can can turn the internet into a cable TV. Just because they own TV and Radio stations they think they own us... Wrong! We are from the internets, baby, the land you are unable to control, because it was designed that way!

Tired of the Government

It's my life not the governments. If I want to end it, it's mine to do so. That goes for the other nanny state crap. If I don't want to wear my seat belt/motorcycle helmet, it's my choice and no freaking government hack should have the right to tell me otherwise.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
