LG claims world's thinnest LCD telly

Flatter panel

Thin-panel

LG CLAIMS it has developed an LCD telly panel about as thick as a pencil, making it the world's thinnest.

According to a press release, the panel is 42 or 47 inches wide and uses an edge-lit LED backlight system that allows it to achieve a thickness of just 5.9mm.

The 42 inch version weighs 6.1 kg and the 47 inch weighs 7.3 kg, about half as much as a conventional panel.

Apparently the picture is not that bad either. No world on cost or if it will ever hit the shops. µ

8 bit / color

I things it is pointless when we are being cheated using 6 bit / color lcd no mather how big the lcd or how cheap the lcd. I hope some LCDIG (LCD Interes Group) can force the member to only produce real 8 bit / color LCD. All TN LCD is fake. They need to go to S-IPS.

Interesting

Drashek is approaching the singularity... or maybe it was the infinite monkey theory. Nothing to see here, move along...

@Jester

As Kedas points out, thickness plays a part in determining how practical it is to wall-mount a TV. It also plays a part in determining where else you can use this type of display technology... As for other devices, making them thinner won't allow them to fit into bags/pockets that are't wide/tall enough, but it WILL let them fit into bags/pockets that are the right width/height but aren't deep enough, or it'll let them fit more comfortably into the same bag/pocket into which your older thicker device was a bit of a snug fit. It might even mean that you can put it into the same bag/pocket as something else, instead of needing two bags/pockets. Provided it doesn't affect the useability of the device, then reducing its bulk isn't pointless.

And no, edge-lit backlighting doesn't mean the results WILL be patchy, it just means it MIGHT be if you don't spend enough time on the optical design.

Thickness

Well if you can just hang it on the wall like a poster that would be nice.
(assuming you have a room where the this design would fit in nicely)

this may well be the first time Drashek has made more sense than the human poster

Nice 'n Lite....

Large 50" Painting weights about same & cost is , in some cases, astronomical.

Weight was big Hamper in LCD/Plasma industry. Don't Bang That Screen, In Fact, Don't Even Move it, it might get Bumped. Hitting screen causes major irrepairable damage.
Light Weight Helps control install & Use of LCD, So LG. Lifes Good.
( Raise New Spock Hand Sign & Repeat 8 Times: LG Lifes Good).Opps, My LG Cell Is Ringing....Hitting $$Monsters In Patuckies, EveryTime.

Pointlessly thin

When you are referring to a 42" LCD, does it really matter whether it's 5.9mm or 59mm. What is the tech worlds obsession with extreme thinness, like the crApple Macbook Air/Dell Adamo: it doesn't *really* matter how thin it is when the main dimensions are 14" diagonal on it's face, it's not like being half as thick as regular laptops will suddenly mean it can fit in your pocket instead of a bag. Same thing goes for way too many MP3 players and mobiles....

Oh, and edge-lit LED on such a large screen, does that mean it's got very patchy brightness?

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.
