MEMORY MAKERS saw their revenues fall to an eight-year low last quarter, according to a preliminary report put out by Gartner Group today.

The chip counters reckon first quarter global DRAM sales amounted to $3.57 billion, down 18 per cent sequentially from $4.38 billion in Q408 and off by a whopping 41 per cent compared to the first quarter of last year.

Samsung remained the world's largest memory manufacturer, increasing its market share during the first quarter even as its revenues fell.

Hynix was in second place, followed by Micron in third, with both companies also gaining market share as their revenues slid.

Elpida fell into fourth place, while Quimonda's revenues fell the most as it declared bankruptcy early in Q1, cut production and sold chips mostly from inventory.

Gartner estimated that the major DRAM manufacturers lost a combined $2.5 billion last quarter, somewhat less than their estimated $2.9 billion in losses during Q408. µ

Close to affoardable

DDR3 was 2,3,4 times more expensive than DDR2 for a long time.. but now it starts to reach affoardable levels.

I think if I was to replace this system with a new one, I would go for 8 GB or 12 GB. Depending on dual or tripple channel memory controller. But 4 GB modules seem a little rare so far.
