Liquid cooled HD 4890 tested

Daily Wibble 1GHz of fun for the ATI crowd
Tuesday, 12 May 2009, 21:05

HERE'S A FIRST on a liquid cooled Radeon HD 4890. Hot Hardware has a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 LCS revs up the 4890 to 1GHz and does away with the fans replacing it with a low profile waterblock that will cool your card and keep it quiet. Now let's figure a way of sticking this in an HTPC.

Hexus also has something that runs a cool 1GHz, a Sapphire ATOMIC Radeon HD 4890. It's an outstanding performer and Vapor-X technology still works great, but Tarinder thinks the price might be a bit off...

Fudzilla is testing the Gainward Bliss 250 2GB Limited Edition graphics card. It has a non-reference two-slot cooler and a frame buffer like no other. The question is: does the card drive something that actually requires 2GB of frame buffer?

UMPCPortal has an Atom MID, the Viliv S5 Premium UMPC, on test. It's a full-on, yet tiny, PC with a 4.8-inch screen (1024x600!) and touch-based interface. Chippy says it's the best UMPC yet.

Jim Buzbee at Small Net Builder is testing a wireless sound system that rivals Sonos, this is the Linksys by Cisco Wireless Home Audio. Costs a pretty penny, but it does the job in style.

Silent PC Review took the time to review the SilverStone Raven RV01 EATX case. "Big" doesn't do it justice, but the big 180mm fans are dead quiet and the HDD mounting system top-notch.

Tom's Hardware Emporium is facing off the CoolIT Domino ALC and the Cogage True Spirit. These are compact liquid vs. huge air cooling.

Steve at PC Perps tested the Asus M3A78-T 790GX-based AM2+ mobo. The board seems to be excellent value, at least until DDR3 makes a big difference.

Motherboards.org is reviewing the Asus P6T SE motherboard. "SE" in the old Asus lingo meant "budget" and as far as we can see the only thing this board lacks is SLI support. For $208 it makes for a really affordable X58 mobo... from Asus.

As odd as it may seem, 9600GT cards like the Gigabyte 1GB 9600GT still make an outing. Considering it's not much different from the current crop of 250GTS', you can get this on the cheap and get an inch within the performance.

PC Shop Talk has a review of the NF-S12B FLX fans from Noctua. The fans have beveled tips to cut down noise and 3 speed settings allow for silent operation. Again, it's a Noctua trademark worth looking at.

Notebook Review pubbed an article on the Toshiba Portege A605, a slim 12.1-inch business lappie that is sure to please roadwarriors. ODD included, it weight just 3lbs.

CCE Reviews (first time on the wibble!) tests the Pelican 1050 Micro Case, it's a watertight carry case that allows you to carry electronics safe from impact and humidity. µ

ATI don't suck. You do.Got a almost 5 year old X800XT. working in my old rig for new 5 years every day boy. Just return your card if under warranty. I got a Sapphire 4870. Works a charm.
