GENERAL ELECTRIC said that it will spend $6 billion between now and 2015 to lever itself into the healthcare technology market.
The money will be spent developing innovative healthcare technology, from portable ultrasound machines to low-cost X-ray equipment.
GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt was quoted by the AP as saying that there are pots of money waiting to be made in the healthcare market as the industry is challenged by rising costs, inequality of access and quality problems.
He said that healthcare needs new ideas, smarter processes and technology that help doctors and hospitals deliver better healthcare to more people at a lower cost.
Any products that come out of the initiative will find buyers in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East, he said, where low cost, portable technology is much in demand. µ
