Western Digital RE4-GP drive reviewed

Daily Wibble Performance and build quality for $30 more
Friday, 8 May 2009, 10:13

BIG AND POWERFUL is enough to describe the new Western Digital RE4-GP 2TB drives on review at PC Perps. These Enterprise-class drives (no Star Trek jokes, please, we know it's "the day") up the ante when it comes to performance and quality. They cost some $30 extra than their Caviar Green brethren, but pile on some 20~30% more performance...

Xbit Labs, too, has some last gen hard-drives from WD and Seagate. Proving every dog has its day, even the weakest of the drives has an upside these days...

Anandtech faced off the Intel Q8400 and the AMD Phenom II X4 940 processors, which share the same price point. AMD seems to have the upper hand most of the time, but the future is anyone's guess.

Coolermaster has developed the V10 CPU cooler in an attempt conquer the crown in the cooling arena. This massive device combines heatpipes and Peltier cooling to achieve its purpose... it does its job, but barely beats a Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120.

DevHardware has a new HP panel, the LP2465 Flat Panel Monitor, a business-oriented kit that you can snap up for a paltry *cough* $700. Connectivity blows, and the price seems insane, but Joe liked it.

Hexus is comparing two Asus cards: the Geforce GTX 260 and the stock-modded (is that possible?) HD 4890. The Asus Smart Doctor will let you over-volt the HD 4890 up to 950MHz and 4600MHz memory... gosh.

Laptop jockeys or "road warriors" as Intel puts it, might be interested in taking a look at IT Reviews... errr... review of the Toshiba Portégé R600-101, the 1.11Kg 12-incher. HSDPA module with SIM slot is included.

Legit Reviews popped a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB drive into their test laptop. Seagate might've been falling behind in the 2.5-inch race, but their quickly gaining ground.

HP launched its line of ProBooks (nothing to do with fruit-themed lappies, we're afraid) a few months back. Today, Notebook Review has the ProBook 4510s on test.

OCIA tests the Thermaltake Litepower 450W power supply. Zahn thinks it's a capable performer that can power a simple gaming rig with high efficiency ratings and a good warranty. Bit on the expensive side, tho'

Tom's Hardware Store rounded-up several G92-based cards, all non-reference and put them through the benchmarking suites. The 9600GT genes went a long way, it seems.

OCaholic in Helvetia is testing the new Zerotherm FZ120 tower-cooler. It isn't a massive, bulky chunk of aluminium on top of a copper block, but a thin, easy-to-mount yet powerful cooler. Worth the €23.

XS Reviews has a go at the Sapphire Vapor-X HD 4870 graphics card, a factory-overclocked 4870 that gives the GTX 285 a run for its money. µ

Actually...

... the review from XS Reviews is not for a 4870 but a 4850... yes, it might be Friday, but reading a review beyond the headline is common sense for every journalist...

"Today we’ve kindly been given the 4850 to review, let’s see how it performs."

Doppleganger

Does listing everything twice mean you get paid twice as much?
