Duke Nukem dies again

3Realms shuffles off to other realms
Thursday, 7 May 2009, 10:31

Nuked

3D REALMS, the outfit which has been making a sequel to the popular Duke Nukem game - something that has been promised more often than the second coming of Jesus and the end of the world - is to close.

Staff working on the project have been telling man plus dog, and Slacknews that 3D, along with the recently-resurrected Apogee name, is finished. Employees from both outfits have been handed their P45s and pink slips.

The news that we'll never, ever see Duke Nukem Forever is not shocking, after all no one really expected to see it anyway, despite all the promises that it was nearly finished.

Mind you, publishing rights to Duke Nukem are owned by Take Two which issued a statement to say its arrangement with 3D Realms did not cover funds for developing the title. We may see the old man yet.

At any rate, this site http://www.3drealms.com is no more... µ

Bad news

Well, that sucks. I wasn't really expecting the game to be released anytime soon, but I always figured that it would be, eventually.

What a waste

Surely there is someone out there who wants to pick up a nearly done title and bring it in for questioning.

The current owners would get more for selling it than binning it.

Mind you "nearly done" is a broad brush. Means something different to everyone, in particular developers clinging to a job version of "nearly done" is slightly different from gamer fuming at unintelligeable gibberish scrawled across a BSOD "nearly done".

Its all about the interwebs...

They should kinda Doom 3 it. Make it a demo of what they got and let it out in the wild as is. I grew up with the Duke and would like to see him in all his smart @ss greatness.

Sad actually...

Sure there was no way it could ever live up to the hype and 3dr's mis-management is legendary. But still... I'm kinda sad. I was hoping they would redeem themselves with a decent, fun, game.

Open (Blood) Source it

Sooner or later after it's release there will be MODs for it, why not just let some of those fellows finnish it.

It could grow into one of the biggest games ever.

have competitions globally, the best get put on the final disk or what ever

GPL the code!

Enemy Territory is probably the best example of what can happen to a project that has it's plug pulled. Get the copyright owners to release the code and do this right. This could still be a huge success...

wtf wtf wtf wtf o_O

hahahahahahaha, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat thheeeeeeeeee fuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkk

i remember anxiously awaiting this game's release from when I was still in the middle of high school! I've been keeping track of it for the past 12 f@#king years!! hahahaha!!!!!! and now it's canceled!!!! omfgrotflmaowwmaabmt

I remember going to the library before I even had the internet at home and printing press release images of the game and stuff....this cracks me up.

actually, i stopped giving a f#$k years ago, and actually sort of hoped they'd just kill the f@#king thing, but never thought they'd really kill it, since they've invested soooooo much work and time on it...... hahahahahahahahahaha!!!! that's a lot of f#$king effort to put into something to just...... forget it....

Wish I was a Fly on the Wall

I too remember the fun of playing Duke Nukem, maybe they will sell it off and a real publisher will finish it. I slam them with real because how long does it freaking take to make a FPS game anyway.
I wish I could know the inside story of how they worked while working on a title for long. I know they changed engines at least once, probably more because they dragged it out so long the engine became obsolete. I think they used their own engine too, if so that is where they screwed up. The should have concentrated on the content and got with ID software to use the latest Doom engine, or Unreal engine.

crap

The main reason I got into gaming was Duke (and Doom). I was looking forward to another release like all the other fans out there.Isn't there anything that can be salvaged? If not then: RIP Duke.

maybe

From guru3d news:

"Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms," a representative for the companies told us. "Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."

Im surprised...

Dont get me wrong, but im a bit surprised to see that people actually care more about the game, than the fact that a lot of people have just lost their jobs.

And those people are not begginers on what they are doing either, so its a bit sad to see this kind of news. More so when it hit long established developers like 3d realms.

I don't get it

I have been an on again / off again gamer since writing my own games in BASIC on my Commodore 64.

I don't get the hype. There have been games that might have well been called "Duke Nuke'em" if they just gave the protagonist a flat top (such as Serious Sam).

Just look how Daikatana turned out after taking way too long to develop. Crap.

At some point, the project needs to die. If someone else wants to rebirth it later, awesome, but you can't keep banging on it for a decade, updating the graphic's engine license every two years, and expect anything but crap to come out.

Fanboy here

ta-da-TA, ta-da-TA, TA-DA-TA!
Let's rock!
(that's my mobile ring tone)

Seriously, even us didn't have any hopes. Leave our sweet memories as they are, instead of releasing a lame sequel that would never fit current standards no matter its production values.

it would be neato

if we could see the source or a semi-compiled version of it to see how far they actually got... maybe the intertubes could steal it and continue it under some Open source GNU license :D

I'm Surprised...

They didn't lose their jobs a long time ago. It looks like Prey was their last big game and that took 11 years to get out... and they had to pay Human Head to finish it! DN Forever another 11 years... I'm sorry but that business strategy is flawed.

What's to lose?

I agree with other comments calling for it to be open sourced, look what the community has done with games such as Freespace 2 and Enemy territoy when they have been released, this game could still be great.

If the name has been sold then a few name changes may be necessary, Nuke Dukem anyone?

One things for certain is that the community will do a much better job than the management at 3d Realms

Did Not Finish

Engine?

IIRC, the latest engine DNF was ported to was UE2.x . GPLing the code may have some issues with EPIC.

sorrow

There is nothing to do but do Shadow Warrior 2 as the last time when Duke was done, But I find it sad really that the constant scrapping of engines and levels maps or whatever never lead to anything.I really think was 24 people working on a game is just too small staff

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of Jack!

So our ideas need to be forward looking and relevant. I felt like there was a lot of nostalgia and the good old days in the messaging. I mean, it's great, but it doesn't draw people toward your cause.
