Brit outfit offers to buy Borland

Micro Focused
Thursday, 7 May 2009, 10:14

ONCE, BORLAND dared take on the might of Microsoft. It proved a step too far for the database specialist and it now looks likely to be bought by UK outfit Micro Focus,  which has offered up a measly $75 million to buy the company.

Micro Focus has a bit of cash to splash and wants to boost its US profile. Buying Borland looks a cheap way of doing that. The firm is also buying software testing kit from Compuware for some $58 million.

Profits are up and the company said it expects to post growth rates of 20 per cent this year.

A "delighted" Chief Executive Stephen Kelly said the acquisitions "position Micro Focus well for significant further future growth."

As far as we know Phillipe Kahn is still playing jazz. µ

Bring back Kylix!

Maybe the Microsoft payoff to kill Kylix will become void if Borland is bought? A good development tool for Linux would be a relief.

@Borland user

Free pascal compiler and lazarus aren't too bad in Linux, although the installing of components seems to be a complete pain in the arse... Lack of meaningful documentation seems to be the biggest problem.

Borland != dev tool company

@Borland user - Borland split the Delphi/C++ development tools business off into a separate company called Codegear a while ago. Codegear was then bought by Embarcadero in May 2008. Todays Borland sells Application Lifecycle Management tools

Philippe is likely still playing jazz. But he is also turning out some wicked iPhone applications under the Fullpower MotionX brand.
