Gates spends a fortune on weird boffins

But there's no cure for Ballmer
Wednesday, 6 May 2009, 15:14

THE BILL AND MELINDA Gates Foundation has been delivering bundles of $100,000 packages to 81 research projects that are original enough to have trouble getting funding.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the five-year health research grants are designed to encourage scientists to pursue bold ideas that could lead to breakthroughs, focusing on ways to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia and diarrheal diseases.

One project is run by Eric Lam at Rutgers University in New Jersey, who is exploring tomatoes as an antiviral drug delivery system.

Boffins at the University of Exeter in Devon, England, want to use magnets to detect the poo of the malaria parasite in human blood.

A US researcher, Mei Wu at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, wants to shoot a laser at a person's skin before administering a vaccine in a bid to enhance immune response.

And Thomas Baker at Pennsylvania State University will give malaria-carrying mosquitoes a cold so they can't smell people.

If any of the ideas work, Bill and Melinda will give them a million to develop their research further.

Now if only there were a cure for the common Ballmer.... µ

What could possibly go wrong?

@cybersaur

There is no need for them to invent a new pandemic that will come to nothing. Bird flue and Swine have used their quota for FUD smoke screens for the next while. They will need to come up with something else to help cover/burry the important stuff in the back pages so people won't notice what is actually going on.
