OVER THE WEEKEND, we heard rumors that ATI was going to drop the price on a few parts by an average of 12-18 per cent. A quick check on several etail sites shows that the 4770 dropped ~$10 in a day from most vendors.
We think a few other cards did drop, or will soon, but tracking prices at etailers is much akin to herding cats. In any case, the HD 4770 is now a $89-99 card instead of a $99-109 card - one that has no real competition in the marketplace.
Until the currently MIA NV 40nm desktop parts come out, the only thing they can fight back with is the much more expensive G92b die. That part barely does not keep up with the 4770 until you get into the higher SKUs with much more memory, and more expensive memory at that. µ
Rather than take the risk that customers will die while using the new 40nm parts, we thought we'd hold off and get independent analysis as to just how life-threatening a manufacturing error can be. I mean, after all, next time, it might not just be 'horrible inconvenience' that our customers suffer.
Here in Toronto, Canada one of the popular Chinatown computer stores (Filtech) has started to sell the Sapphire 4890 card for only $270.
Just about 2 weeks ago I bought a 4890 from them for $300. The new price suggests a 10% discount which basically what you claim.
I've been tracking all Chinatown store prices and all the popular Canadian online stores and so far Filtech is the only store offering this new low price.
No "rebates", no bull.
For the record, Charlie I've been keeping up with most of your articles and I hope you continue to write well-informed articles in the future, too. I firmly believe that the truth must be spoken/written even when it's ugly and that is what you have been doing.
nVidia deserves a kick in the balls so often...someone's gotta give it! :)
Cheers!
@ Jen Hsun - ROFL from the owner of a busted crapass HP :~)
The new cards from nVidia seem quite good - but if ATI keep moving the goal posts by 5, 10 and 15% - and the DX11 game seems to be up for (the real) Jen Hsun & Co... then you have to ask "Will nVidia EVER get the momentum back from ATI ?"
Newegg is selling a 512MB version of the 4850 for a whopping $89 after rebate (or 110 before!)

How long can they go?
The nVidia Quadro FX 580 that is listed at US$ 149 is about on par with the ATI FirePro V5700 that costs 3 times as much. I am wondering when will ATI react to the new workstation card from nVidia? That segment should have in general higher margins, so why would AMD want to loose more share in that segment?
I know nvidia is hard to like sometimes, but are they really this bad. If nvidia is gone then all that is left is intel and amd.
I've been pretty anti nvidia for years with all the bad experiences I've had with them but I don't want them to go away and I still recommend their good products to people. Just stay way clear of their motherboards and accept that both nvidia and ati release lemons sometimes and it's ok to switch brands when that happens.
I love AMD for driving the prices down,
and I do wonder how Nvidia can sell more gfx chips, with AMD clearly the better choice at the moment? Wierd.
Err, the 9800 GTX+, a.k.a. GTS 250 is faster than ATI's HD 4770 while it has the same amount of memory, but it's cheaper GDDR3.
Of course the card is a lot more expensive than ATI's, but the memory isn't. So what are you talking about?
I'm fine with my GeForce 6800 GS for now. By the time I upgrade, AMD/ATI will probably make all their cards at 40nm or better. Which is good, because I hate a superheated case.
Do u no anything about anything.
R u comparing the 9800gtx/GTS250 just cos they have the same amount of memory, Heck y not compare the 4870 since it has the same amount of memory. Seriously there is more to a GPU then RAM, and u said cheaper DDR3, they have DDR5 which costs more but a smaller 128bit bus which cuts down costs. Ever heard of the GPU to compare with, And yes it might be faster, but this is ATI's Low end segment which is competing with 4850/gts250 which is middle segment.
But seriously u dont no crap about gfx cards so just ssshhh nooob

Intel's Larrabee might struggle like a wheezing asthmatic with 'real gaming code' in DX9/10/11 - but those same chips will ROMP in workstation applications
Expect to see 100% certification for all Intel products into the workstation market - alongside MASSIVE spend on marketing programmes supporting the benefits of a 100% Intel Workstation solution
Who has 85% of the workstation market ?
nVidia
Who makes the VAST majority of its bottom line profit from workstation products ?
nVidia
Who will see their shares MASSIVELY devalued once Larrabee launches ?
nVidia
Right now - Quadro rocks - no doubt about it
But it isn't ATI's Fire Pro etc that Jen Hsun stays up late at night worrying about - it is getting the arse torn out of the bottom line by Intel that really hurts - hence all of the 'anti-Intel offensive' from Perez/Evenden and Co
Good luck boys. Let us know how that works out for you :~)
