TAIWAN SEMICONDUCTOR (TSMC) reported better than expected first quarter financial results on Thursday and said it expects the chips market to recover in the second half of 2009, although its first quarter net profit fell off a cliff compared to last year.
TSMC's revenue fell to $1.187 billion in Q1, down nearly 55 per cent from $2.628 billion in the same period of 2008. Its earnings for the quarter were down by 95 per cent year over year to $45.9 million.
The company said in a statement, "After sharp declines in two consecutive quarters, TSMC is seeing a strong rebound in its second quarter business and believes overall business in the second half of 2009 will be considerably better than that of the first half."
TSMC said its customers were replenishing inventory and launching new products, and that demand in China is getting a strong boost from its government economic stimulus.
It announced plans to spend $1.5 billion on new plant construction and equipment this year. µ
