GPU sales to pick up pronto

The sun will come out tomorrow
Tuesday, 28 April 2009, 16:40

THE LATEST REPORT by the graphics gurus at Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has a ‘things-can-only-get-better' optimism about it, predicting the economy will pick up by the third quarter and that both Intel and Nvidia should emerge from the crunch relatively unscathed.

JPR said that whilst the channel had tightened its belt to make it through the bitter credit crunched winter of 2008, depleting its inventory of GPUs, the ice was now melting and the channel was ready to stock up again. After all, noted JPR, "consumers continued to buy, albeit they bought less".

Intel and Nvidia purportedly bucked an eight year seasonal trend of negative sales down approximately 5.6 per cent from Q4 to Q1, with this year's Q1 shipments up 3.3 per cent, although the year to year picture still looks bad overall.

JPR says GPU and IGP shipments dropped 21.1 per cent to 74.9 million units from the same quarter last year, with some firms feeling the hit particularly harshly.

As far as market share is concerned, JPR reckons Chipzilla gained 7.5 per cent since Q408, Nvidia increased its share by 4.8 per cent, and cash strapped AMD lost 8.5 per cent.

Year on year things look a bit more even between rivals AMD and Nvidia, with Arab Micron Devices down 27.5 per cent whilst the Green Goblin shows a loss of some 25 per cent. Intel's IGP appears to have been more recession resistant, only losing 8.2 percent.

The biggest loser actually appears to be floundering little chippie, Via, down by a whopping 76.8 per cent.

Taking out its crystal ball, JPR says things will get more or less back to normal by Q3, and things should be right as rain again by 2010, because as the organisation insightfully notes "people still need to buy things".

Other psychic predictions include an expectation that both ATI and Nvidia will wow punters with new designs very soon indeed, that more GPUs will be based on a 40nm process and that "holiday madness" and back to school fever will provide a release for "pent up" punter demand.

JPR also reckons the upcoming Windows 7 launch and Apple's new Snow Leopard OS will drive the market onward and upward. µ

Pronto U said? Maybe if.

Maybe if they make a limited time offer like: Buy one at regular price and get one FREE ;) for your SLI/CF pleasures, I think that would work... No? ;b

Sylvie,

Since when AMD is Arab Micron Devices?
You sound like a Jew. Am I right?
In contrast to Intel they are going to create jobs for American people!

Floundering (sic)?

Via may be foundering, but it certainly isn't floundering.

founder v.intr.
1. To sink below the surface of the water: The ship struck a reef and foundered.
2. To cave in; sink: The platform swayed and then foundered.
3. To fail utterly; collapse: that business soon foundered after the market crash.

One small problem...

For PC sales to improve people need to have money to spend.

No job = no money = no purchases

Nice one : Arab Micro Devices

It's a funny comment about the fact that AMD wouldn’t have survived without Mubadala's money or it would have been a much different situation. Now that Mubadala owns 33% of AMD's current manufacturing facilities with 60% coming in the New York project, we could say it's now a much tanned, camel ridding, company ;)

no games

i invite anyone to visit any game store and tell me the number tittles available for PC or if any of them is worth it all.

These GPU makers better star to incentivate game studios or in a blink they will see their business go down the sink.

i used to be into pc gaming.Since i got a ps3, I havent needed to purchase a new gfx card , or a new computer.I haven't purchased a pc game for years now.

So if anyonone at ATI or NV is interested, pc gaming is not what it used to be , the world has changed , and the desire to have the latest and greatest gfx card is becoming a thing of the past.

I suspect they know this already and thats why they are now touting graphics gpu's as the new cpu.
