AMD ups X2 speeds with the 7850
AMD IS UPDATING the 'Kuma' cored Athlon 64 X2 with the new 7850 Black Edition. In an unlikely trade, it is losing the 64 and gaining 100MHz.
There is not much to this launch, it is a speed bump of the older X2 7750. Both are 95W parts built on a 65nm process, have 2M L3 cache, and are Socket AM2+. The new part should retail for $69 or so, pretty good deal for an unlocked 'black' part.
Contrary to what we said yesterday, several readers pointed us to this article that points out core unlocking is much more hit or miss nowadays. In any case, the X2s should be unlockable, sometimes, and if you get a good one, you scored a great deal. If not, it is still a solid CPU for $69.
Until the 45nm variants hit, an Athlon X2 7850 and an ~$75 780G board make the core of a very nice starter machine. µ
