NEC AND RENESAS have decided to merge to create Japan's largest semiconductor maker.

The pair say they will have their operations merged by April 2010 and become the world's number three chipmaker behind Intel and Samsung.

It has been expected that chipmakers would merge in a bid to handle the economic downturn. µ
