Microsoft revenue slips more than five per cent

A softness in the force
Friday, 24 April 2009, 13:45

MICROSOFT said yesterday that its first quarter 2009 revenue slipped 5.6 per cent from last year and its net income fell 32 per cent. This marks the first time in its 23 years as a public company that Microsoft hasn't reported quarterly revenue growth year over year.

The US company blamed lower global PC and server shipments for the decline in revenue, along with the increasing popularity of inexpensive netbook PCs at the expense of sales of more powerful desktop and notebook PCs.

Microsoft sells its older Windows XP operating system preloaded on netbooks for as little as $15 per machine. That contrasts with the $50 to $60 it reportedly receives for each copy of Vista.

Netbooks aren't powerful enough to run the far more resource-intensive Vista, which has been broadly rejected by most of Microsoft's large corporate customers and many savvy consumers alike.

The Vole's quarterly profits missed Wall Street analyst expectations by over 15 per cent. µ

No surprise

This should not be a big surprise to anyone. In this economy, how many have bought a new PC with Vista. Not as many apparently as Microsoft would have us believe.

@No Surprise

I bought a PC with Vista. Runs perfect. It is the economy that is dragging sales, happens to everyone as much as readers here may want to believe differently.

Vista = Garbage

DRM, active activation, endless wizards, a dozen clicks to perform a simple task...

Garbage!

Since Windows 2000, its been down hill.

Win DOH's users

I think it serves them right (Microsuck$)! When they build an OP sys that is more concerened about Harvesting Data secretly from the users about what hardware and software they buy and use and how often, rather than working the way the USER wants the OP system to work , I hope they go bankrupt soon! But since they lost money I'm sure the price of Windohs 7 will go up to make up the lo$$.

Micro$oft

I use XP, i hate everything about vista. However i do like windows 7, i installed in on a really shitty computer with a gig of ddr400 ram and old ass HDD's and it ran very smoothly. In fact i will be installing it when i formats this machine again. Do i hate Microsoft...i hate the idea that they control the computer market. This linux os...whats it call Ubtall or something, if they could get games to run on it or if game makers started making games for it then i think slowly the market will increase for this free OS. Right now DirectX is what is pushing everything PC, and slowly HD movies are creeping in as well. That is why i think these little netbooks are flying off the shelfs.
