Bluetooth 3.0 will be eight times faster

Synergy with 802.11 WiFi
Thursday, 23 April 2009, 16:46

THE BLUETOOTH 3.0 specification launched this week and this next version of the low-power wireless protocol will be eight times faster than its predecessor.

Devices built to the new specification will be able to use alternative antennas and 802.11 protocol adaptation layer connectivity to improve data throughput to as high as 24Mbps, which will be a big increase from the 3Mbps speed of Bluetooth 2.1.

Bluetooth 3.0 will be able to piggyback on faster but less power-efficient 802.11 wireless transport in equipment featuring devices that support both Bluetooth and 802.11 WiFi.

When data transfers don't require the faster speed of 802.11, the devices will downgrade the Bluetooth connection to 3Mbps to reduce networking power consumption.

Michael Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG standards group said, "What we’re doing is taking classic Bluetooth connections - using Bluetooth protocols, profiles, security and other architectural elements - and allowing it to jump on top of the already present 802.11 radio, when necessary, to send bulky entertainment data, faster."

The new protocol will help mobile device manufacturers who adopted the low-power, limited range Bluetooth for its support of device sync and peripheral connections. Using Bluetooth 3.0, those vendors will be able to use 802.11 radio circuitry to extend data throughput without using WiFi networking, which many handsets lack.

Speculation about how Apple might adapt its next Iphone design for Bluetooth 3.0 has already started among its fans, and it is likely that Bluetooth 3.0 will appear in the next generation of netbooks and even ultraportable and larger PC notebooks.

In a related note, Broadcom announced today that its BCM4325 chip, which handles Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11 WiFi as well as FM, has already been certified and will be available in quantity. µ

Why do I get the feeling that this will never work as advertised?

......

because it`s just not what bluetooth is supposed to be. we already have wifi so why should i care if bluetooth just nicks this already available feature...

Bluetooth is forever crap

Bluetooth never worked as advertised. I am using bluetooth daily and writing through it now actually and I am helping others with doing the same.

I hate it. It's crap. The worst thing about is, that it was ever invented. Had it never been invented, then something proper might have been invented instead.

The idea is good. It was just blind people implementing it.

The biggest bluetooth killer is probably Broadcom and it's crap software and then Nokia who are accepting, that it just doesn't work properly.

There will be an end to it. The sooner the better.

8 times....

Now all they've got to do is make it 8 times easier to use and then maybe us mere mortals would be able to use it. Although I've made Bluetooth work on occasions, it's never been reliable enough to actually rely on.

Are they at last giving up

trying to force a very badly implemented proprietary solution on the gullible public when there was an free open standard available?
So finally, having cleaned the public out of billions they are now effectively dropping back on that tried and tested standard ... to clean the public out of more!
Whatever next -VOIP phones that you plug into your computer and do... exactly what your computer can do anyway?

Bluetooth monitors?

Now that bluetooth is so fast does this mean we can have bluetooth monitors. I think it would be great, i could wall mount a monitor for watching videos. Is there enough bandwidth to broadcast HD content to a monitor in a different room?

Also looking forward to usb 3.0 :)
