Media industries stuff up EU telecoms reform

Obstinate French government
Thursday, 23 April 2009, 14:15

MOVIE AND MUSIC industry lobbying has stymied a reform of the EU's telecoms industry.

In a desperate bid to preserve a 'three strikes' and you lose your internet connection 'anti-piracy' law at the movie and music industries' behest, the French have blocked a programme of sweeping reforms of the European Union telecoms sector.

France said that it wanted the 'Hadopi' copyright protection law to be voted on in its own parliament before it backed the needed telecoms reform.

The move has Brussels furious because the Hadopi law to restrict Internet freedoms has already been rejected once.

However it seems that French President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to make sure that the plan is not scuppered by the EU telecoms law change.

The EU wants a law that will allow ISPs to cut off internet connections only if a court confirms that illegal file-sharing 'piracy' has taken place.

Sarkozy's French government wants to cut off everyone who the music and film industries call a 'pirate' without any judicial process or actual evidence of wrong-doing being required to do so.

Quite why Sarkozy is prepared to anger the EU over the matter is anyone's guess. However the French obstinacy is stalling other much needed reforms of the European telecoms industry. µ

Sweet!

If they would bring this law into effect it would mean a few things:
1. Politicians in my city would get their three strikes in a matter of weeks
2. Even casual pirates would stop using bittorrent and use rapidshare and such like the hardcore ones do.

This is just like Aikido, the more power your attacker has, the more you can hurt him with less effort.

Since when

Since when did the Music and movie idiots become the rulers of Europe?

I must have missed that memo..

The leaders need to remember who runs their respective countries, and tell the corporate idiots where to go. You don't stop progress that improves the lives of your citizens just because some greedy buggers think EVERYONE is going to share their movie collections.

Poor ISP's

Please spare a thought for the poor ISP's. They have families too who need feeding. How will the little mini-ISP's survive, when there are no subscribers. :-(

With all the downloading, a thought should be given to the poor Cinema operators, Projectionists, and poor old Mable selling Ice Cream in the Foyer. All these will be redundant when we stop going to the Cinemas. :-(

Has the Maffia thought of becomming the worlds largest ISP, as well. Then they can Traffic Profile to their hearts content.

The Music/Film industry needs to get to grips with this technology. If I were a downloader, I would be happy to pay for a movie - provided I could get it when it was released, and not 6 months after it hit the Cinemas.

When considering this issue, it must be looked at in context of the whole industry from the Artist/s, Distribution, Retail outlets, and infastructure, even down to the effect on the Indian restaraunt that advertises in the Cinema.

So many Leaches - er Supporting industries.
