Your email says a lot about you

Putting on the style
Wednesday, 22 April 2009, 12:46

IN A CONNECTED WORLD, the way you conduct yourself online can say a lot about you.

Some people you email will be all over your missives like a rash, basing judgements about your social class, intelligence or bad habits on your use of grammar or lack of familiarity with txt talk.

According research today from gmx.co.uk, a free email service, 54 per cent of the British public admit to basing social judgments on the style of emails they receive.

Some 36 per cent would "approach romantic suitors" via email. Surprisingly, their prospects will differ if they write, "Would you care for a spot of dinner this evening?" as opposed to, "Do you fancy a shag?"

Some 40 per cent think they can judge intelligence from an email, which just goes to show how dumb some peope are. This rises to 54 per cent in 25-34 year olds.

Eighteen per cent of under 25s say they would end a relationship via email.

The survey of 1900 UK consumers found that one in three adults admit to purposefully adapting the language and style of their emails to create their own 'email image'.

The yoof are best at this though apparently. And are much more sophisticated all round in the way they use email.

According to Graham Jones, who apparently is an 'Internet psychologist', "It's all to do with the way the brain gets wired up - younger people don't even have to think about email, it's obvious to them." µ

Email vs. chat

Regarding judging people's true nature online, real time chat is much more revealing than email. With an email you always have the option to place your words very carefully, by taking enough time to carefully compose your message.

With chat it's much closer to a real conversation. If you take several minutes to reply you're not going to come off especially bright no matter how well you write...

@Max R

Conversely that is why they are so revealing, since typos etc. can be spell checked and caught well in advance of sending. It is easy to 'judge' someone that sends a really poorly formatted email since they had time to fix it but either didn't care or didn't know how to do so.

A slight clarification

" Some 36 per cent would "approach romantic suitors" via email. "

Or

"Some 72 per cent of male users "approach romantic suitors" via email. "
Only 72%?

Re: Fancying A Shag

Well, obviously that depends on the type of shag.

A Carolina Shag might be fun. Or we could go see what the Black Shags are up to. After a day of all this strenuous activity, we could be all shagged out.
