Nothing is impossible for the person who doesn't have to do it - Weller's Law
THE OLPC project has dumped AMD chips in its XO-1 laptop hardware in favour of Via's C7-M processor.
The XO once ran on AMD's Geode processor, but the OLPC project said that the Via processor has a clock speeds of 400MHz - 1GHz. OLPC considers this an upgrade over the Geode LX processor as it also requires a bit less power.
In a press release the OLPC team wrote that Via is providing a chipset that will include a 3D graphics engine and high-definition video decoder.
AMD said it wanted to phase out the Geode low-power chip which would have left the OLPC project high and dry.
Systems will apparently become available for testing in August. µ
Why can't they use a Nano? Gee, the C7 is outdated and the higher speed versions get quite hot under heavy use.
If Negrponte et al ever actually produced working designs or product they would do themselves out of a very soft feathered nest, not wouldn't they? So, keep switching the design around, keep bouncing between Linux and XP. This is how the academic/institute/NGO system works.
Isn't this thing dead yet?
I don't know why they are still bothering, I mean they've sold their soul to Microsoft. Oh hang on, weren't they wanting to use ARM? I guess they don't mean enough to Microsoft for it to port Windows to ARM.
I give it 12 months and this thing will be dead in the water.
Rob
Duke Nukem Forever? They'll probably have the same release date.
Rob, I was just think that.
OLPC drops AMD....? When is the world going to drop the failed OLPC...
OLPC is getting old... Put a fork in it already....sheesh...
Because somebody there sold out to Microsoft.
Laptops won't set people free.
Projects like RepRap will set people free.

Negroponte is doing a great thing.Perhaps if Intel hadn't pissed all over them they'd be doing better.
Join thr coalition, push your own product, quit the Coalition push your own product.
Can you say SCUM?
Is this a one-pony show? This group should be long dead by now. They've shot themselves in the foot so many times... good luck putting out a product worthwhile.
OLPC is just a project to train the poorest children of the world in the ways of technology so that there will be a greater pool of poorly-paid tech monkeys to pick from with outsourcing. Whoever thinks cheapo laptops will lift these countries out of poverty is kidding themselves.
And anyway, OLPC is being outpaced by ever cheaper handheld devices from commercial entities anyway.
