PURVEYOR of ultramobile PCs, OQO is desperate for cash and is looking to flog itself off to the highest bidder.
OQO has come up with some pretty natty designs but as the recession bites no one wants to splash out on high priced PCs these days.
As a result, the company is having cash problems and views a buy-out as the best way to solve its troubles and make OQO more competitive. If it doesn't find one soon, the OQO could shut, we hear. µ
future is not UMPC or MID. future is UMPC+Smartphone combo. OQO Model 02+ and earlier itself was copy from another base design.
The challenge is how to achieve this combo. Cuz GSM side of phone must be kept mission/life critical. Its not about writing just some phone dialer with its icon on vista's desktop. The challenge is what HTS has progressed through i.e. HTC Shift X9500 i guess. it can even run Windows7 and faster. plus to keep GSM side mission critical, the seperate OS is runing on SnapVUE so the phone is like X86<- ARM with Vista<- SnapVUE isolated enough yet Vista can peek inside SnapVUE to copy SMSs, contactbook etc.
Though HTC Shift is height of mobility (please just 3+mp camera and 3.5GHz-Wimax also)... being too elite or too unique is fearful, e.g. one will miss Mobile-Windows-7's charms, spirit, problems to guide ur friends, ur sugar... u cant just say i dont know i use vista smartphone. Maybe Mobile-Windows-7 will never show up Miccrosoft would surprise all us saying, u forgot singularity !?! here is desktop windows7 patch, it will unlock smartphone install option in Installer. rememeber in windows98 Installer !?! their was specific option for latop called Portable http://www.directron.com/windows98guide.html "Portable (Windows will be setup with options that are useful for portable computers)". Their might not be any Windows-Mobile-7.
What good is a powerful computer that will run all of your desktop softwares that are designed to be used with a keyboard when all this thing gives you is two fingered input? I could have told them years ago this was all wrong and they would never make any money. OQO is just like the other UMPC's which all have had no real success. The problem is that they are making computers which go against what we want. How many people are going to say take away my keyboard and force me to try to write my next novel with two fingered thumbs? or learn a new way to write using an electronic pen?
The basic flaw is to believe that people would want to do the kinds of work they do with a full laptop using your thumbs? That basic assumption is what has doomed OOQ since they started years ago. Updating anything in the computer without addressing that basic key assumption which is wrong will never create any demand.
People would be willing to sacrafice and use a smaller screen, not have all of the frills of large laptop, but even anticipating a tighter position with your two hands to type, people would never want to use a two fingered approach to performing PC work. They should have used a traditional handhelds clamshell design.
Those handhelds back in the 1990's were the perfect size to carry and use. Their only flaw was nobody at that time could fit a full PC into that small cavity. Now technology can enable that but so far all of the computer companies have forgotton about the basic way we want to use a computer.
They made the smallest PC but forgot that for a PC to be useful it needs to follow the same way we use a laptop or desktop PC. No keyboard no need to buy one.
I really liked my OQO until it's internal acreen stopped working. I sent it back and have not heard from the company. I call and each time the tech tells me that no one has worked on it. It would seem simple to me to either fix it or send me a new one.
supreme allied c,
I glanced at OQO talk forums and they said that OQO has sent users broken OQO's back without repairing them; I think that is a sign they are about to close the doors? I highly doubt you will get it repaired from them and the chances of getting a new one are probably close to zero as the warranty is probably useless right now.
If you are set on using an OQO, many people are selling them cheap anticipating they will go under and at that point they will not be worth much at all?
