THE HUNGARIAN Government has ordered its civil servants to spend the same amount of cash on open sauce projects as they spend on proprietary software.
Until recently, the Hungarian authorities used to name vendors that government departments should to use. However, the new rules, announced by Ferenc Baja, deputy minister for information technology, mean that from a budget of around 80 million euros, 40 will be allocated to Open Saucery.
Not surprisingly, the the Hungarian open source community has been opening the Champers over the news. It will be the first time that open source will gain equal status with proprietary vendors in centralised public sector tenders. µ
