Wii production costs 45 per cent lower

Nibble Less water
Wednesday, 8 April 2009, 11:56

PRODUCTION COSTS on the Nintendo Wii are now 45 per cent lower than they were when the console shipped in November 2006.

Koya Tabata an analyst at Credit Suisse noted the drop in Wii production costs as an indication of how much of an uphill battle the PS3 has to establish itself.

While the PS3 is enjoying a run of hardware success, Tabata pointed out that Nintendo can counter this any time it likes by dropping the price of the console while still making shedloads of cash.

He said that the Wii costs no more than $137.50 to make, even though the system sells at $250 in Japan.

Wii should revolt

Was it not just in January Nintendo announced a price increase to the Wii in the UK due to a weak pound? The big picture is that they are milking the entire world for what is a poor console with a great control system.

Milking?

A 'poor console with a great control system' is what people want. No one 'needs' a video game, so how is it milking?

Wiitards

Wii owners are wiitards, they don't care how much it costs, as long as they can jump around playing fake tennis and pretend to get fit... If Nintendo says it's great then it surely is, it's not the emperors new clothes at all...

Mind you not as bad at the Xbots, who rejoice the fact they got a "free" extended warranty because their console is so shit...

Wiitards?

Mark you are an idiot and you sound like Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Kaz Hirai when he said; We're the "official" industry leader News: "This is not meant in terms of numbers, or who's got the biggest install base, or who's selling most in any particular week or month, but I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry," Hirai told Official PlayStation Magazine.

So playing tennis on your playstation is real then? Get over yourself m8!

So im an Xbot playing Wiitard? What does that make you? It seems like you are stuck in the same world as mr Hirai, keep on dreaming...

Tjeez, why are these Sony fanbois always this jumpy?

ps. I feel I am the "official" king of the world, I dont care that I dont have any subjects or a country for that matter, I dont care about any other kings, I am the "official" king of the world, better yet, im the king of the universe!

You got me wrong, I don't own a PS3 either. I'm a PC gamer. However when I do buy a console, it's almost certainly going be a PS3, firstly because having PC and PS3 you get near 100% game coverage, whereas all the Xbox exclusives are all out on PC anyway, secondly, it's got the better games (sorry Xbots, Microsoft has you brainwashed into thinking otherwise).

@Mark

So that makes you a PCtard or something like that? Or is it more specific, as an nvidiot, fanATIc,AMDroid or intelidiot and the likes? That's capitalism, Nintendo delivers the best experience in games for a reasonable price, people will pay for it. The fact is that nintendo can't meet the demand for Wii consoles at $250 price point, so a price cut would bring an even worse shortage. The wii is the living proof that graphics alone don't make a good video-game. Xbox is sold at same price and still sell less. PS3 is an underpriced (that's right) piece of junk that makes Sony loose tons of money and at same time, don't bring so much of a good experience for the gamer. As for mister PC Gamer, a fully fledged PC for games doesn't come cheap, right? Summing all the parts for decent, console level gaming, that's about $1000,00 without monitor. That's 4 times the cost of wii, smart pants.

Good.

Now they can start putting money into versions of the Wii that can use the GameCube controllers interchangeably with the Classic Controllers, and an adapter to attach the GameCube Game Boy Advance player.

Oh, and maybe HD output and a DVD player.

@Curious

So you own a $250 Wii and no computer? Oh, that's right, you own a computer as well, maybe you got it for $600, which provides you with fewer games and way worse graphics for $150 less? That's cool.

wiitards

mark, your cheerleading for PS3 makes you a fanboy whether you own the device or not.

i don't like consoles period. they killing it of the real gaming. i wouldn't mind their existance if not for the effort to cross platform everything. it is not consoles fault as it is, but the gready publishers. for now the most serious stuff is still PC exclusive (can you imagine non arcade-like FlightSim on console?) but this line becomes more and more blury.
i mean look at the somewhat resent shooter COD5. i don't care much about shooters but the fact it was released for PS,xbox and PC means that effort was made to water it down so consoles can run it. that effort could have been spent on making the PC version better. again, it is not a console but gready publisher fault. and unfortunately the way is only downhill from here. bit upsetting.

you for some reason being entertained by wiiTennis or those idiotic car arcades on ps[#]/xbox, well, more power to you. i guess every one can have their fetish. your console of choice is getting cheaper? well, good for you.
but please, stop porting this mindless crap to PC...

just an angry rant.
PS: i'm well aware that PC platform is most expencive one

lol@ Curious also

I guess you're typing your comments from a Wii console?

The computer can be used for other stuff other than *gasp* gaming, so your comments are hilariously out of whack.

A decent computer will run recent games, allow you to multitask, surf the net, and play your various media files, among other things.

As a fellow Wii owner, I can say with no hesitation that the Wii is ultimately OVERpriced compared to the more expensive, but 10x more useful Personal Computer.

RRP?

I've heard rumours that Wii was the only console to ship at a profit at launch. Xbox and PS3 sold the console at a loss in hope to profit from software/accessory sales. So it's 2 years later, the production costs are down 45%, the R&D is pretty much paid off, and the console is STILL the same price it was at launch.

I guess Nintendo won't budge the price until demand tapers off. I'll get one when that happens.

Quality Games?

Clearly not. It's a shovelware platform, everyone knows 97% of wii games suck badly...

You are far better spending your cash on a PS2, it's cheaper and has a far better selection of games

Oh my...

Wii is a brilliant console, not because good graphics or even mostly good games but due to the control system.

PS3 and XBOX end up being inferior to PC in many games, superior in other. Which system one prefers is up to himself.

And the fact that 97% (nice for made up statistics) are crap is irrelevant if the one game I want is in that application. Software drives system sales, not hte other way around - and what manufacturers look for a a killer application.

IMO Wii has a dual killer app: great innovative control system (innovative in the sense it is standard) and Wii Fit.

Xbox and PS3 have... yeah, better graphics, inferior to PCs and the same old style game, a bit rehashed.

But to each its own.

re: Oh my...

97% is not made up (read the link). Only 3% of wii games actually make the 80% score classed as good or better..

97% of Wii games are turds...

As for the innovative controller, you clearly don't know the PS3 also has motion sensitive controllers as standard. It's also got bowling games, if that floats your boat, and guess what it looks better, and is more accurate than the crappy wii controller that seems to have a mind of it's own..

Infact, even the PS2 and EyeToy software is more accurate, as the footie and window washing games will clearly show, plus the added advantage of now having anything in your hand to launch through the dog/tv/window.

previous game gen console?

Mark once again being a sony chealeader. if one set on getting old console system the choice is clearly ms xbox. chipped, loaded with 500Gb HDD and running xbmc. console and media center for someone not in need of HD. the last versions of xbmc i've seen even had experimental web browser that was working quite well given game controller being sole input device.

i will agree that wii is just way way overhyped thoguh.

@tank

Why invalidate your warranty and limit yourself to non-online gameplay by chipping an Xbox?

You can do all you mention on a PS3, without the need to void any warrranty, you still play online (for free), and get Blu-ray too.

Really you would have to be an idiot to spend that money on a 360 for a non-HD movie streamer, when the PS3 does it, and does it quieter and better (the codec support in PS3 is vastly superior to anything the Xbox offers), plus it's got a web browser right there, with flash 9 support, no hacks needed and you can stick whatever HDD you want in your PS3, or connect an external one...

you suggested PS2 over Wii and as a IMO better solution i suggested the outdated Original xbob instead of outdated PS2. if one wants to go the old console route at all that is. so no warranty concerns there. i guess you not following your own discussion line...

Milking the market

In response to mike who asked why I said Nintendo are milking the world with their console I put it this way. My wife demanded she get one after falling for the hype and it sits under the TV gathering dust. At least my PS3 is switched on most days making it far better value for money.

Wii is the only true console this gen.

The wii is so successful because it's a pure console.

The PC is so successful because it's not a console at all.

PS3 and xbox 360 are bare-bone personal computer just as much as they are consoles and that doesn't seem to work very well at all.

Re: Wiitards

"Wii owners are wiitards, they don't care how much it costs"

Um...dumbass comment that. Point #1, the Wii is focused on making games more fun where as PS3, Xbox, and even most PC games are focused on eye candy. In my opinion the new way to interact with the games makes up for the fact that it's less powerful than the other consoles. Point #2, it's the least expensive console out there. Hence why I say your comment is a dumbass one. Point #3, it's not targeted at hardcore gamers, but at the far more lucrative market of casual gamers and kids (sure they spend less than the hardcore gamers, but there's a hell of a lot more of them). Casual gamers are looking for kick ass graphics, they're looking for a fun game for a reasonable price, which brings us back to points #1 and #2.
