INSPECTOR RAM KNACKER of the Velachery Yard is scratching his head after the mysterious death of a bloke in front of his computer.
The 28-year-old Indian software engineer named as Vijaya Kumar, was sitting in front of his PC when there was a loud bang. His flatmates rushed into the room to find his burnt body dead in front of the smouldering ruin of his PC.
Since it was not a laptop, or anything that had a battery, no one can work out what caused the blast.
One copper said that the scene of the accident seems to suggest that the man was killed in an accident as his body was in the sitting position in front of the burnt computer so it was close to instantaneous.
If it was a dodgy part, then what kind of computer fault could have such an explosive outcome? µ

Finding the wrong kind of instructions for "how to build your own bomb", on the internet?
Sorry, but that's my guess. Just because he was sitting at a computer doesn't mean the computer kiled him.
The bloke in China who was reported o have been killed by an exploding phone was later discovered to have been an amature gun-maker who was killed by one of his own creations.
I am sure Charlie is working hard trying to find out if there is an nVidia card in the box.
We'll know soon enough.
Maybe the house mates are just lying and really they tied him to the chair and set him on fire...
Ropes burning in the fire... ohhh the perfect crime...
One item that can explode is a high voltage capacitor found in the input stage of the PSU. If there is a fault in the capacitor or if it has been installed the wrong way round (+ to -) then a slow electrolysis of the fluid in the capacitor can occur leading to a build up of a high pressure mixture of hydrogen and oxygen inside the capacitor case. The capacitor also heats up during this process and when the gas mixture ignites - BOOM.
Ha, that's damn funny you made me laugh out loud
too funny mate ! laughed out loud at how right you are!
An exploding capacitor is hardly lethal in an enclosed PSU, but if it started a fire and the guy was sleeping...
An exploding CRT in the face, on the other hand, could be interesting...
I wouldn't underestimate the power of a exploding capacitor just yet. An old work mate of mine was testing a PC which wouldn't power up and when he pushed the power button on the PC the capacitor exploded, punching a hole through the side of the PSU. The PSU in question was only a cheap low power OEM one that was with the machine, I should imagine if anything went wrong with a high powered PSU and one of their capacitors, they would make a much bigger mess.
Considering the cpu capacitor size,it does seem a bit of a whopper.
If it does turn out to be the case,I wouldn't let Al Quaeda know, they might start a big bombing campaign with them.
However,if the capacitors are the paper kind, then, another conspiracy theory will have to be found.
The above mentioned article is false (or atleast, not well researched). The guy (Vijayakumar) had actually killed himself for personal reasons by dousing himself with kerosene oil.
The desktop computer which happened to be in the living room got destroyed during the incident. And I know this because I am a grieving freind of his.
He may have been having a heated discussion, and got flamed? Oh hell that was lame..
Nobody thought about the fact that he probably ran some flavour of Windows on his box? That woul be plenty of explanation for selfcombustion of the software engineer...
why you should never try to upgrade directly from XP to Windows 7.
Can't say he wasn't warned.
It has been discovered that the real cause was......a Linux user whom became unbelievably irate over a failed update of his Linux based OS and his body spontaneously combusted!
CHENNAI: A young software engineer working with Tata Consultancy Services was killed in a suspected computer
blast at his home on Telugu Brahmin
Street in Velachery late on Friday. The incident took place when Vijayakumar (28), hailing from Madurai, was working on the computer.
Police said his charred body was found in a sitting posture. “We are yet to ascertain the cause of the blast. The computer was completely damaged and the deceased was charred,” a police officer told TOI. Vijayakumar was sharing the house with two other software engineers, Vignesh (26) and Ram Prasad (26). When the accident occurred Ram Prasad was in the room with Vijayakumar, police said.
“Ram Prasad had gone to take bath. He told us that suddenly he heard a blast and when he rushed out he saw the charred body of his friend and fainted,” the officer said. However, the case has baffled the investigating officers. “It sounds quite unbelievable. We have not heard of such a case before. But the scene of the accident seems to suggest that the youth was killed in an accident as his body was in the sitting position in front of the burnt computer,” the official added.
:sobs: He promised me I could have his computer when he died. Now they're BOTH gone! :wail:
