AMD offers Opteron upgrade discounts

Cheaper chips
Tuesday, 7 April 2009, 11:39

AMD IS OFFERING DEEP DISCOUNTS to businesses which are planning to upgrade their Opteron processors.

The Californian Company today announced the Opteron Upgrade Program which includes 2000 series and 8000 series dual- and Quad-Core Opteron processors along with the upcoming six-core processor codenamed 'Istanbul'.

Channel partners and customers are being offered the CPUs at up to 35 per cent off, which means the chips will be between $50 and $100 cheaper.

The move is aimed at server and data centre admins who might be tempted to rip out older servers and replace them with fancy new boxes.

AMD reckons that replacing CPUs which use its Direct Connect architecture is a doddle and that upgrading your current kit, with the added benefit of the recenly-announced discounts, could just make you 'a hero at work' without having to wear your underpants outside your trousers. µ

Uh-Oh......

Sounds as if a particular company is running scared over I7 and the upcoming I5 and knows they have nothing to match it anywhere on there upcoming roadmap.....

Was Istanbul chip...

ever called the Constantinople chip?

If I knew my history better(MUCH better, since I know almost nothing) I could probably come up with a pretty good joke here.

Oh well.

Hero Pants

So the underpants over the trousers is strictly optional now ?
I guess I'll have to save them for casual Fridays, or when I am alone in the server room........
Still, I gues discounts are what you do when you have had 6 years to improve the product and haven't done a great job at it.
