Adblock Plus filter list inventor dies

He saved our browsers
Tuesday, 7 April 2009, 09:52

THE BLOKE who helped save Internet users from irritating adverts, Richard Albany, has died after a short illness. He was 56.

Rick, who went by the name Rick752 in the community, was one of the first supporters of the Adblock Plus project in its difficult starting phase. It was Albany who built the Adblock Plus filter list and his EasyList became the first entry in the list of recommendations shown after Adblock Plus installation.

The accuracy of the list enabled the rest of the development team to build and improve the software.

A spokesman for Adblock Plus said that, with his work, Rick helped improve the browsing experience for millions of people, saying "He built up such a strong community it will be possible to find someone who can take his place." ¶

Ultimate filter

He hasn't died as he has invented a new filter that stops humans from seeing him. He's still out there somewhere. Now we know how it feels to be an advert that has been filtered out

A moment of silence

for this fellow would be appropriate. He definitely improved my on-line life. I wish his family, and the adBlock team, well.

His name was Rick Petnel, not Rick Albany

Please correct the mistake in his name - he deserves better! He passed away in Albany.
