Atom takes Intel to the top

Netbooks help Chipzilla
Thursday, 2 April 2009, 13:32

INTEL'S ATOM chip seems to have helped pull the outfit's nadgers from the economic fire and helped it gain market share in every quarter of 2008.

According to market researcher iSuppli, Chipzilla could be carried by the Atom this year too. The chip maker ended the fourth quarter of 2008 with an 81.8 percent share of global microprocessor revenue, up from 78.4 percent the same time a year earlier.

Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst at iSuppli said the Atom has become popular as the netbook market has gained steam.

Intel's gain has been at AMD's expense. The smaller outfit's microprocessor revenue market share shrank to 10.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2008, down from 14.1 per cent a year earlier. µ

Ah AMD...

AMD needs to put something on the market fast, they should have no problem seeing they love low power stuff :)

Makes Me Wonder!

Makes me wonder why didn't AMD compete with Intel Atom...they do had something on the tracks in the name off "Bobcat" but too bad they ditched the idea. Well now they can see that was a "BIG" mistake!
