One in ten TVs will be 3D-capable in three years

Gamers driving new standards
Wed Apr 01 2009, 05:20

MEDIA ANALYSTS ARE PREDICTING that ten per cent of home entertainment screens will be capable of displaying three dimensional images by 2011.

A report published by Screen Digest says that autostereoscopic technology will eventually become the industry standard as it has one major advantage: no glasses.

Subscription providers like Sky will lead the way because terrestrial broadcasters don't have the bandwidth, or production cash, to cope with the new technology.

But it won't be movie fans who drive the new technology forward, it will be gamers, who are much more likely to be early adopters.

And with most emerging technologies, content will be king. Marie Bloomfield, Analyst at Screen Digest says: "What 3D offers the studios and pay TV operators is an opportunity to charge a premium for content – perhaps even more so than high definition. But as it is emerging in the middle of a recession, the home 3D market is in a Catch 22 situation. Consumers will not be persuaded to invest in new equipment to experience 3D until there is enough content, and content production will not ramp up until there is a significant audience." µ

Games? We all know what will really drive it home...

Come on, we all know that new technology in the living room is driven by pr0n. Make that 3D, and it'll be one year.

I can't wait

If you are Geek like me and enjoy reading technology news and going to Best Buy then you have to agree with me. This will take longer but it will be cool, makes me think of Star Wars where C3PO is playing chess on the ship against the Wookie and pisses him off by winning, "Let the Wookie win". Ah, I chuckle still.

I've seen the future and it is 3D

I have seen the glasses free screens and they are great. They are not ready for the home. However, in the next two years. And porn will not drive it. The current craze in 3D movies and in gaming will be teh driving force.

Sport?

Sky Sports must be interested.

Close up motor racing would be cool;
in car,
literally just outside the car,
front bumper,
rear bumper.

Football would be cool, in time for Euro 2012.
Maybe some type of Head/Waist/Foot pieces worn by player for really up close shots.

Olympics?
I think the olympics is the most over rated pos sports for tv. £1bil per day is way too much cost for what you get.

According to wikipedia the "autostereoscopic" method can cause headaches.

Possibilities for upgrade?

Wow! Imagine being able to upgrade that 3D processor in the TV. Just like a motherboard. Upgradeable 3D daughter board for your 3D TV from NV or ATI.Amazing!

3D TV?

Already can do it, I watched Chuck recently in 3D, okay it wasn't the best quality ever (the 3D glasses didn't work too well with with my regular glasses - I need contact lenses) but it worked. That was using a standard HDTV nothing fancy.
