Microsoft punts server platform to smaller business

No job too small
Wednesday, 1 April 2009, 15:55

MICROSOFT IS NOW OFFERING its Windows Server family of operating systems to smaller firms with the creation of Windows Server 2008 Foundation.

Aimed businesses with 15 or fewer users, the software allows small business customers to run the same business applications and databases as much larger outfits, host Web sites, and provide basic server functionality such as file and print sharing and remote access.

"Today we are launching a new server-based solution with the right technologies at the right price to give small businesses access to the power of server-based business software," Microsoft mouthpiece Steve Ballmer boomed. "Small businesses around the world have big business dreams and needs. To support their success I am also pleased to announce that we will donate a portion of the revenues of Windows Server 2008 Foundation to TechSoup.org and Telecentre.org, two organisations that focus on bringing the power of technology to nonprofits around the world. We see this as an opportunity not only to deliver a technical foundation for business growth but also to create a financial foundation for community.” Aww bless!

Microsoft’s big plan is to provide a cheaper cut-down Windows Server-based solution for small companies whilst they are still small companies, and then offer upgrades as the business grows. The full-blown system includes integrated e-mail, simplified management, virtualisation and other advanced features.

The company will make the operating system available initially across 40 countries and in several languages, beginning with English, traditional and simplified Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish, with more localised versions coming throughout the year. µ

Please provide pricing links

I care more about the price than anything else. Microsoft can make every promise in the world to be my best friend, but atleast 65% of there revenue from small business. Microsoft nickle and dimes you for everything. I can imagine it now, its only $50 for the software but each seat is only $25 bucks. Screw them, they hurt small business more than anything else. Their programs aren't compatible, Going from windows server 2003 to 2007 caused so many issues I won't mention. \I'm done with my rant...

Buying Window Server Foundation could never be easier. Windows Server Foundation comes pre-installed along with your server hardware saving you the efforts of separately procuring and installing the operating system on the server hardware. And as Windows Server Foundation is supported by an extensive network of trusted Microsoft partners..."

Seeing as Windows 2007 does not even exist as a product, I imagine it was one hell of an upgrade

Kneejerk reaction to Lotus Notes Foundations from IBM, to say nothing of a cheeky bit of name borrowing.

“Starter Edition” For Servers!?

Why would you pay good money for something with arbitrary limits built into it, when you can get a free Linux system with no such limits?
