AMD prepares 'very low-power' Shanghai

Nibble Counting down for launch in three months
Wednesday, 1 April 2009, 12:26

AMD says that it will release "very low-power" Shanghai processors within three months, accordingtp PC World.

The new quad-core Opteron EE chips will deliver similar performance while drawing significantly less power than its predecessors, AMD said.

The chips will use the 45-nanometer manufacturing process and will be part of the Opteron processor family.

AMD's announcement is no doubt a bid to draw some attention from Intel's new quad-core Xeon server chip announcement without the need for something basic, such as a product. µ

About time.

When the new 45nm X3 chips came out, was sure they'd go down from the 95w of the 65nm chips. Maybe it was the extra cache that used more power.
