American Airlines plans in-flight Internet service

Wi-Fi in the sky
Wed Apr 01 2009, 11:08

MEGA US AIRLINE, American Airlines has annouced that, after a six-month trial, it will install Gogo Inflight Internet service on more than 300 domestic aircraft. The kitting out of the company's Boeing MD80 and 737-800 aircraft is planned to take two years to complete.

Gogo turns an aircraft into a Wi-Fi hot spot, which allows passengers to surf the Internet, check mail and instant messages and even access a corporate VPN. Mobile phone and VoIP use is not available.

The Gogo service, which is provided by Aircell, becomes available when the aircraft has reached ten thousand feet. Passengers with Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, smartpones and PDAs can then browse to the Gogo portal page to sign up.

Aircell's pricing plans are:
Long flight pass: $12.95 - Standard price for flights longer than three hours.
Short flight pass: $9.95 - Standard price for flights three hours or less.
Mobile flight pass: $7.95 - Mobile device pricing for customers using a handheld device on Gogo-equipped flights of any length.

Aircell says that it can install the Gogo kit overnight. This includes three small antennas installed outside the aircraft, which connects to Aircell's nationwide mobile broadband network in the USA.

Since Aircell won the exclusive FCC frequency licence in 2006, expect many more airlines to offer the Gogo service. µ

No VOIP, VPN or Porn...

So there will be no VOIP or VPN access... Plus I see from one of the linked articles that porn is banned too (like anyone will be thinking about sex when they're jammed next to a 280lb guy called Cletus!)...

Which leads me to one question... Apart from commenting on Inq, what else is left on the internet to do?!

Maybe some web 2.n I guess...

Facebook: Steve is on a plane. The food is shit and the guy next to me smells.
Twitter: I am on a pln! Fd is sht n guy nxt 2 me smlls!

A bit late, eh?

MEGA US airline American Airlines is just second choice.

MEGA MEGA international airlines like Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines already offer what the second choice wants to do in a few years. And the MEGA MEGA international airlines use high-speed satellite communications.

It's like with washing machines. Europeans replaced the top loaders with modern front loaders in the 60's, almost half a century ago. Legacy top loaders are still state-of-the-art in most US households. Sorry.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
