Microsoft offers Marketplace teaser video

Nothing like Apple App Store... honest
Tuesday, 31 March 2009, 15:17

EXPECTED TO BE LAUNCHED ALONGSIDE Windows for Mobile 6.5, Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile (please don't call it an App Store, that sets the Volish marketing monkeys all of a dither) has been previewed in a promo video.

If you've ever seen Apple's offering in action there's probably very little to surprise you here, other than a slightly different (less elegant) user interface. it's all much of a muchness.

Applications are browsed using a scrolling list, user reviews are rated using a five-star system and purchases are made using a credit card tied to a user account.

Software is then downloaded to the host PC or handset and automagically installed on both.

There is, however, one major difference with Microsoft's Marketplace. As well as buying new apps you can also get a full refund on the purchase price if you're not happy with the software.

Which could either mean Vole anticipates lots of complaints about sub-standard products, or it just wants to offer better levels of customer service than the likes of Apple. You decide. µ

Why so critical?

"There is, however, one major difference with Microsoft's Marketplace. As well as buying new apps you can also get a full refund on the purchase price if you're not happy with the software."

Sounds pretty good to me. You wouldn't catch apple refunding money for anything. They would likely attempt to release a patch and then charge you for that too.

As far as Android goes, how is their store better than Apple's or MS's store?

And lastly, it isn't 1996 anymore, using the dollar sign in MS makes you look like a tool.

But what about the free stuff?

So, there's a gabillion gajillion free Windows Mobile apps already out there, and that's what makes WinMo so great to so many people. It's also where Windows Mobile surpasses the iPhone. So I'm not sure why anyone would use a fee based app store when there's already free stuff available. Maybe laziness?

When "new" is not so new...

I thought one could get refunds for apps purchased on the App Store... did I miss something? See http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/25/apples-iphone-app-refund-policies-could-bankrupt-developers/
