Adobe wants more Flash in Facebook

Software behind the scenes
Tuesday, 31 March 2009, 11:17

ADOBE has signed a deal which will make it easier for developers to stick Flash software under the bonnet of social notworking apps.

The firm Adobe has introduced a new ActionScript 3.0 client library for developers who are using Flash on Facebook's developer platform and Facebook Connect product.

The software maker will be promoting the possibilities of integrating Flash with Facebook's API on its web site. µ

Great even more flash.. not

Just what we need even more flash in facebook.. Fortunately I have flashblock installed, so I'll get even blank space on screen..
On the other hand, if they would use more flash instead of animated gif commercials they would make me a happy camper..

not cool

I'd like to invite Adobe to kindly shove off until they get their heads out of the sand and build working flash plugins for FreeBSD (at least i386 and amd64) and various ARM-based Linux builds. If they finally get around to doing that, fine.

But of course

Why shouldn't Adobe code plug ins for all 14 people that use freebsd? That seems perfectly reasonable...

Also, if facebook does this, they are officially jumping the tech shark. Soon the site will be as unusable as myspace.

@ Saveusjeebus

If Adobe (previously Macromedia) want to push Flash as a quasi/de facto web platform standard then they can't afford to ignore any platforms.

I personally don't care for Facebook and other notworking sites, although more flash can't be a good thing. The only time flash has been useful is to try and standardise multimedia browser support, a la Youtube (No more 'media playback requires xyz plugin). Oh, and to waste office workers productivity time by playing breakout.

What is scary is too many web dev courses appear to mainly consist of flash dev teaching (based off many arguments with web dev friends of pure html+CSS vs flash)

A better title

Better title would have been "Flash attack on your face - book"
Fricking monopolistic companies manipulating consumers, not that it's abnormal.

The flash** hits the fan

Adobe and Microsoft - I could not think about any other company that has done more harm to computer security than these two.

Flash? Only over my dead body!

Flush Flash From Facebook

I have repeatedly complained to Yahoo about bloody Flash based ads hogging 100% of processor time so that attaching files is like wading through quicksand.

We need to campaign to stop Macromedia's horrible products hijacking our computers.

No More Flash

Flash is OK for presentations and interactive discs, but thats it...i personally hate flash web sites and all of those annoying banners.

BUT, using flash in any web site...

Loading sucks, "creative navigation" sucks, Plug I requirement sucks, Annoying sound and music sucks, Security sucks, Invisible for every single search engine available in the net sucks, XML sucks, programming a bunch of things just to make a simple change sucks, issues when used with php, ajax, cms, etc. sucks, web browsers problems sucks, embedded info problems sucks, website reporting on flash navigation sucks, usability sucks, flash Lack of consistent cross platform support sucks, code embedding flash objects doesn’t pass w3c validation sucks, some people avoid flash ads wtf?...sucks, flash breaks search engines sites previews sucks, disabled people can't visit a flash site, i don't know....there's a lot of things going on when using flash, can't name it all...

But people will continue using flash like a never ending story, that's the sad truth, things won't change, probably we'll get better flash blockers in the future.
