INTERNET TELEPHONY PIONEER SKYPE is launching its VoiP software on the Iphone tomorrow, though it remains to be seen if Apple and O2 will allow UK users to get free Internet calls.
The problem is that Apple is tied to a single airtime provider in the UK, the aforementioned O2, and the likelihood that it will lay down quietly while Skype kicks chunks out of its income with free VoiP calls is pretty slim to say the least. Especially considering that all current UK Iphone contracts come with unlimited Internet access.
So unless you have a jailbroken handset on a no-O2 contract, we suspect that all the hype about Skype will pass you by. Crackberry users, on the other hand, will be in free call heaven from May when Skype releases software for RIM's handsets.
We will, of course, admit to being completely and utterly ill informed should tomorrow's Itunes App Store launch prove us wrong. Don't hold your breath now. µ
Wowser wowser, it was genius. :D
Title as in honorific mate.
Has been crippled (disabled for your phones normal use - i.e on carrier 3G network). Use Fring on a Nokia and get full functionality - Fring on Iphone has also been crippled.
Thanks AT&T
I've read this over and over and it's killing me. What am I missing with the 'Mr' comic genius? Please have mercy on an old man, someone explain. I can usually, sortta, kinda, maybe, decipher Drashek (or not), but this has me baffled.
If you follow any/most of the BBC Tech journos on Twitter, you'd think there were few phone brands/models out there apart from Apple and the iPhone. If they're not tweeting about the phones then it's the Macbook Air, iTunes, iPods etc.
One might get the feeling that these guys and gals were all kitted out by Apple and are returning the favour.
Bob, that's comparing apples and oranges (Okay, apples and 3's) :-)
3 are a bit more liberated than the other networks, purely because they are new and had to try to win network share. The old 4 are still desperately trying to cling onto their old business model.
My N95 had the SIP stack disabled by Orange when I bought it. Luckily it wasn't a big job to sort that out, and I've enjoyed many free calls from distant countries thanks to Fring (my skype client), and open wifi points.
Unfortunately Apple are more in bed with the networks than Nokia, so I fear they might be trickier to bypass, but I'm sure it'll be quickly "fixed", if you don't mind jail breaking it of course ;-)
Whats the big deal? I have a K850i on 3 and with my £20 a month tariff I get free unlimited Skype calls to other Skype users. With Skype if you want to call anything other than another Skype user you need to buy credit (don't think thats supported on my phone).
Skype have already lobotomized the app for the American market and forgoed sms capability / calls over 3G. I doubt o2 are going to care much about a few VOIP calls over wifi but if they do its only a quick phonecall to Cupertino to get it sorted out.
Oh, and putting Mr in the title box... comic genius :D
Huh? I don't understand why this is a big deal. You can already get VOIP on the iPhone. I use it to make free calls to freephone numbers. Also, Skype calls are only free to other Skype users. Dialling anything else costs you SkypeOut credit and why would you want to buy that when you have £35 per month prepay calls? It would only be of use to PAYG users who own their phones outright anyway.
