Acer sued over slow Vista

1GB of memory is not enough
Monday, 30 March 2009, 10:57

AN OHIO COUPLE has sued Acer America claiming that it deceived punters by claiming that laptops with just 1GB of memory can run Microsoft Vista.

Lora and Clay Wolph said that the Aspire 4520-5458 notebook they bought in April 2008 would constantly freeze or crash when they tried to run Vista Home Premium.

The machine included 1GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 610M integrated graphics chipset. The court case claims that there is simply not enough RAM to run Vista and it only worked when they upgraded to 2GB. µ

OEM Sh*t

Well, naturally it's not enough when these shitty OEM laptops are filled brim with all kind of crap in their startup processes. I installed Vista Ultimate for my mom, using my old hardware; Athlon 3200+ 1GB Radeon 9800 Pro, and it runs just as fine as it did with XP back in the days, even with Aero enabled.

Wrong diagnosis

Freeze or crash? That sounds more like a hardware issue than a memory issue. Some forum posts describe it as showing video glitches on the screen, so perhaps the chipset is overheating, maybe due to using system RAM as video memory. Others have mentioned symptoms like these after upgrading the RAM or changing it. So it sounds like Acer isn't doing proper heat management or something.

Adding 1 GB of memory would only be a bandaid to the real problem.

ram?

yeah, if id doesnt work it must be the ram. it is always the ram. how can it be anything else?

my 4400AM2 HTPC with 1gb of ram is running vista for over a year now. at work we updated one of the test machines to vista on the day of the release. at 512Mb it was quite sad to work with but everything worked nevertheless.
i feel for the couple, but chances are it is some sort of crapware that they have running on their lappie tanking the kit.

Frivolous

I hope the court awards them the $20.00 it likely cost to upgrade the memory. That way Acer gets punished for misrepresenting the product (since they will probably be assessed court costs) and the plaintiff gets punished for launching a frivolous suit since they will have to pay their own legal expenses. Best of both worlds!

Scum Lawsuit

Right.... some random couple from Ohio decided to sue... WHO IS THE LAWYER TRYING TO BLACKMAIL THE COMPANY? Gee, are these people getting PAID to be the plaintiffs?

I think they have a point

We all know Vista is a resource hog and it has been proven to be so. It is also known 2Gb is what should be given to Vista, I know I am going to be flamed about this. But I do agree there are way to many BS lawsuits out there. wasn't there a class action one against the vole for Mellenium II, aka Vista. Fun aside Vista is not too bad now since it has had SP1 and many fixes done to it. I just ordered a couple days ago and will receive an Acer laptop from newegg.com today. It was a steal at $399 with free shipping. T3400(2.16GHz) 14.1" Wide XGA 2GB Memory and DX 10 compatible GMA 4500M Video. I picked up 2 more gigs of ram for $18 at newegg, newegg rocks. Vista should run just fine on this setup for cheap. As soon as I make recovery disks (just in case I want to put Vista back on it) I plan on wiping it anyway and trying Linux on this, the new Ubuntu will be my first choice. My hope is to get Ubuntu, Debian or Mandriva running ship shape on it and it will stay a 100% Linux laptop. Where are the Linux guys who were slamming me in another post for going back to XP on my Eee PC.

congradulations to regulas

regulas, i'm very much thrilled about you having a new laptop. and for cheap too! way to go on the research you did. and the fact you going to go linux on it is just marvelous . the Linux guys who dared to slam you must be running to their toilets now.

think that from now on you should keep us here informed on your purchases. that's what the comment section here is for.

Why would you sue over this

Some cheap cars have a hard time climbing hills, maybe I will sue Hyundai. It is a cheap laptop and they advertise it has 1Gb RAM, 1Gb is enough to run Vista, I have done it myself. Some people should be sued for being stupid. I am not saying they are excellent machines but you get what you pay for. Suck it up and buy RAM like everyone else.

@SEBO

You can indeed install Vista with 1GB RAM. It's possible, not usable...
Besides your machine has discrete graphics, you don't need to share memory with it. These folks notebook probably does. Só they actually have less than 1GB to use with vista.

RE: Tank

I'll be sure to keep you posted. Do you want me to explain how I am going to remove the D: partition in my Eee PC hard drive without buying any partition software. :-)

Typical...

Americans would rather sue than fork out a whole 15 bucks for a stick of RAM. Geez.

Do people even know what Memory is?

Short changing the system RAM is just going to increase traffic on the swap-disk slowing things down.

I would like to announce that I plan to sue them for suing Acer as it upset me and I almost lost sleep over it.

1GB is useable

I bought an Asus laptop for my girlfriend more than 2 years ago which came with Vista Home Premium installed with 1GB of RAM, a 1.8GHz Core Duo, GMA945 chipset and 100GB hard drive. Even though I have since added an exta 1GB of RAM and replaced the hard drive with a 320GB 7200RPM drive, it was still quite useable before those upgrades. It is true that Vista runs slower on 1GB of RAM, but certainly not to the point where it doesn't work. What people should be suing Acer for is several of their laptops that were released with only 512MB of RAM and PATA hard drives in them with Vista installed. That is just wrong...

Partitions

@regulas - I'm told that Vista has a nice partition tool. Dunno if it can see volume D though (manufacturer's secret boot tools drive)!

Um, wouldn't you want to leave the service tools on the machine??

I'm Suprised

No one here has flammed the nVidia chipset lol if it's freezing/crashing then it's defo a hardware issue or it could have been a recent install issue.

And I agree with the 1st comment Acer laptops have all rubbish installed on them for example. Trial games from some company called Oberion there was about 20 installed on my mates new laptop which is a Acer Aspire.

Some other stuff like Microsoft Office 2007 20 or 60 day trial why remove the dam thing and install open office I say. About 2 years ago laptops would as well as desktops from Acer would come with AOL and Some Kids software which wouldn't un-install properly.

When people ask me about buying a laptop I give a spec with at least 2GB RAM, 160GB or more HDD, ATi g.card or nvidia and give them a warning on the crap that will come with XP or VISTA.
