IDC gives thumbs up to software as a service

Cost cutting
Fri Mar 27 2009, 12:50

BEANCOUNTERS and pontificators on stuff, IDC has said that software as a service (SaaS) has much broader potential than the niche areas it is being peddled towards.

Robert Mahowald, director of on-demand and SaaS research for IDC, said only a quarter of companies IDC surveyed are late adopters of the service or are choosing to not adopt it at all.

Enterprise customers are falling over themselves to stuff their secret data onto the cloud because the economic downturn means that they are looking to cut costs.

He said that, by eliminating cost, complexity, and the need for an IT staff that is primarily dedicated to the time-consuming task of maintaining IT environments, cloud services enable CIOs to shift resources to more strategic projects. µ
