GOOGLE'S STREET VIEW is the subject of a formal complaint sent to the UK's Information Commissioner (ICO).
Campaigners at Privacy International say they have gathered reports from more than 200 members of the public who say they are identifiable in the pictures.
Director of Privacy International Simon Davies said the complaint followed "embarrassment and damage" some Britons suffered by being snapped by the Gurgler's big van.
"We're asking for the system to be switched off while an investigation is completed," he said.
When Street View launched in the UK on the 19th of March, Google said faces and vehicle registration plates would be blurred. But Privacy International has had complaints from various individuals who feel they have been compromised by the service.
Google has already had to mount a purge of pictures following the appearance of naked children on the snooping service.
Street View serves up 3D images of 22,369 miles of UK streets in 25 cities.
The ICO said users who feel they have been exposed should complain to Google to get the offending snaps taken down. µ

The INQ Mothership
Does this mean people are going to start demanding media companies blur out faces when they do crowd shots at sports events.
Should i also have portions or my memory erased at the wend of every day in case i remember any of the faces i've seen.
Its just a shame we share the planet with these petty penises. I went on google maps yesterday to check out the street view feature for the first time and two thoughts came to mind,
1, this is feking awesome, its amazing and only a company like google would do this off their own backs and not charge for it,
2, Cool, I wonder if I'll be pictured in my street and immortalised for ever on the internet.
Lets make it fair ... Majority vote rules, yes? Is that how it works in this country?
In the blue corner we have 200 people who don't want StreetView because they have no lives and don't want everybody else to find out.
In the Red corner we have ?? people who thing StreetView is a powerful and unique tool which everybody can benifit from.
I wonder who will win.
I think it is awesome, and I AM ON GOOGLE STREETVIEW. I am so amazingly excited about it as well.
. . . they can have all our DNA in a database, tap our phone calls without asking, sift through our emails and when the technology allows it get into your head and read your thoughts?
The whole point is that you give an inch with Google, Corporations or the government and they take a mile. Many things that compromise privacy will make yours and others lives easier but does that mean you want to go down a road that you might not be able to come back from?
Sounds like the U.K. government hates competition.....
sounds to me like its a thing about Google beeing american, how dare they come and take over do what they want, and rape our virgins. Not in my country!
This is so silly, damn cops have mini copters now. Go rage against that.
@Phil "they can have all our DNA in a database, tap our phone calls without asking, sift through our emails and when the technology allows it get into your head and read your thoughts"
Well the government can already do DNA databases, tap phone calls without asking, have a phone call database, sift thought emails, and they are working in Paranormal / Parapsychology. Just one of the things your Ministry of Defence projects
leader, vith zee vision and reich mindedness to use zees tecknology for zee greater good, to remove zee evil unpure races from zees vorld!
Zee heil!
Let us, the vorkers of progress and tecknology, march onwards. Zee heil, zee heil, zee heil!
Be careful what you do today doesn't kick you in the ass tomorrow.
Google maps is cool, but being able to see naked people inside their homes isn't necessary.
I've seen loads of registration numbers that are perfectly readable.
I think that it makes burgling a property much easier because the thieves can see security alarms, work out escape routes etc.
Terrorists have said they use google maps for planning attacks.
On balance, like everything, it can be ued for good or bad. Just like cars.
I am split here - i think it's a cool but on examining my area - I can see straight into my house, through into my front bedrooms, from the height you can also see in to my well protected and covered garden, straight through my conservatory and can see exactly how to enter my house. Unless you are in the right spot of the garden you can not see this. It is worrying me.
Close down Google Street View you say? Certainly not, as these are only single images captured in time. This is a very highly valuable piece of IT Software that both the public and businesses can use to display specific areas, especially Estate Agents to give their clients a good idea as to areas specific.
If we carry on with PC Correctness at this hideous level, you won’t be able to take even your own holiday snaps in ‘Police State UK’.

"Google has already had to mount a purge of pictures following the appearance of naked children on the snooping service."
Should parents really be letting their children run around naked where they can be seen from a public road?
And if your one of those people opposed to Street View, then what are you doing in public that you dont want on camera?
The title is Google Street View not Google FACE View. Why can't google replace people with an icon or something. I'm not interested in people's faces, I'm interested in what the street & surrounding would look like at street level. I'm sure google can code something that recognizes people and just replace them with a picture of an inanimate object.
I find it rich that considering the UK government, running one of the most advanced and complex CCTV camera operations than any other country, has the cheek to ban google for an entirely useful service. Me, well I live on a private road, so I'm safe, for now.
Yeah! Let Google promote the pictures as a crime-fighting measure! And watch the bureaucrats' heads explode...
This is probably one of the most useful things I have ever seen on the internet. Simply awesome. Like many things someone could use it for nafareous purposes, but the benefits to the law abiding majority far outweighs this. I hope Googles efforts (for surely they will make many) to remove images people don't like, will appease those concerned and allow the rest of us to enjoy a very impressive piece of technology.
