Ailing Hynix thrown a bone by Intel

Servers stuffed, MetaRAM validated
Monday, 23 March 2009, 15:10

MEMORY-MAKER Hynix has broken some good news for a change. The company has managed to validate its first MetaRAM-based 8GB R-DIMM DDR3 products chez Intel which, despite sounding boring as heck, is actually quite important to the company.

The Hynix promise says its kit will fill up your Nehalem Tylersburg-EP platforms with a wondrous 144GB of DDR3 R-DIMMs in tri-channel mode flowing along at 1066MHz.

Validation on 1333MHz and 16GB R-DIMMs will follow shortly, says the company. The 16GB DDR3 DIMMs will double total capacity to a whopping 288GB of RAM.

The company has been working on this for the past seven months and, despite taking its time to get there, this is good news for the ailing business. For Hynix, validation might turn a page in the company's ledger, as it can now pitch its wares with the blessing of Mother Intel and be introduced through Intel's own channels which, as you know, is like cash in the bank. µ
