CHIPMAKER RedMere has tied up with the cable maker Monster to produce the world's thinnest 'smart' HDMI cables.
The new digital audio and video interconnectors will use RedMere's MagnifEye active chip technology and Monster is providing the wire.
The claim is that the HDMI cables will provide optimum performance when used with a wide range of products.
We are not sure how much it will cost yet, but Monster cables are usually monstrously expensive. µ

why on earth?
before i would not argue with self proclaimed "audiophiles" on merits of "monster:i-have-extra-cash-but-no-brain" speaker cables and how their gold plating or whatever gimmicky cable construction feature helps the "purity" of the sound.
but now its all digital! 0s and 1s. there is signal or there is no signal. done. why pay more then 10$ for the stupiid hdmi cable?
to the topic, ok so its thin. so one can have hdmi cable of mouse-cord diameter. woopty. so what?
5m HDMi cable £5, only at Bluepoint or Redstore.
If you know somewhere else please post it here ;-)
HDMI - digital, like the other guy said, any old brand will do.
How are they doing this without breaking HDCP?
What I don't understand behind this concept is usually cables are designed with specific properties which make the whole design unique. For example a HDMI 1.0 cable has different physical properties than a 1.3 cable. So... just because you put a chip in a thin wire, doesn't make it better - at some point no matter what the wire will have a maximum performance level.
I sense snake oil.... But seriously, how do they get around HDCP?
If RedMere's marketing is to be believed, it appears they're just using adaptive equalization to try and filter out noise.
They also didn't mention how long the cables are. You can run Category 2 signals up to 15 feet or so on smaller-gage cable if built right. I can't imagine Monster making anything extremely thin, and it sounds pretty pointless to try really. Then again, Monster cable buyers aren't all that reasonable to begin with.
The folks making and selling Hi-Fi gear have been missleading people ever since the CD made it's entré.
Moast people stil don't get what digital means.
Nobody would dream about paying hundred of dollars for an ethernet cable. Still any ethernet cable is good enough to carry high def sound for multiple chanels. Why? It's digital and there is error correction in the off chance that a 1 has turned out to be a 0 in the other end.
Any one claming that you get better soud if you use an expensive HDMI cable is ignorant or deliberatly misleading and should be set straight!
This little clip is pure gold! Don't be fooled by fancy brands, digital cables don't have to cost a fortune.
