GAMING BOX BUILDER ACER has been forced by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall a number of its top-end Predator desktops because they present a burn hazard to users.
The machines, which were sold between May and September last year for up to $6,000, were manufactured in China and have model numbers ASG7200 and ASG7700.
The recall comes after Acer received reports of internal wiring becoming bent or stripped causing the computers to overheat. This has lead to short-circuiting resulting in melted internal components and external casings.
Acer says if you have one of these machines you should turn it off right now, don your asbestos underpants, and get in touch for a free repair. µ

Why on earth would anyone waste $6k on a PC? Why not build yourself? Lazy and stupid, so they deserve the shoddy Chinese $6k PC. .... I'd be seriously pissed, but since I haven't bought a ready-made PC since I were a wee nipper back in Jan 2k (and it had nothing to do with the Y2K bug), this would never happen to me. HAHA!
@ I Know
I thinky ou miss the point yes its an expensive pc and it would be cheaper for you to build your own system. HOWEVER, if I had spent 6k on a pc I'd be really annoyed to find it was made on the cheap in china... It's liek the cheap stuff in apple products, when you pay premium you expect a higher quality of componets, better build quality and reliability.
I wonder what the components and labour comes to (well under 6k, probably under 3k with the buying power of an organisaton liek Acer) it's actually a joke...
How many amateur builders do more than stick the components in, add a couple of fans and make sure their system doesn't fall over? How many place the completed build in hot rooms and exercise CPU, hard disk and graphics card to the maximum at the same time?
In theory all the faff with choosing heatsinks, fans, component installation etc is handled by buying it from someone else. Unfortunately it appears this is not always the case.
Still, at least paying in this case means it's fixed for you.
Arnie will be laughing all the way to his weekly mud bath.
@I Know - The point is not about how to build your own computer for cheap. The point is that Acer failed to do their jobs in putting that thing together. I looked at the fugly thing a while back and said "That thing's gonna overheat...it's like a plastic brick!". It's not about where the machine is manufactured either, most of your components are made in china. If they got components made in the US...be prepared to pay a few times the price! People buy expensive computers because they don't have the ability to build something of that level and at the same time want something that looks cool so they can show off. That's where it's at! It is however, better to spend 6K with an independent system builder who knows what they're doing as opposed to this for sure! Oh and yeah...arnold...LMAO!!!
I'm guessing it's because Doctors just wanna play some Crysis. They know crap about building PC's. If everyone knew everything about IT, we woulnd't have jobs.
I expect 'faulty' units to fetch a price premium on eBay soon - after all, if you're daft enough to spend a stupid amount of dosh on something that looks like a piece of dodgy scenery from a Blake's Seven episode, what better than to have one that can actually do its own smoke effects too.
