Apple redraws world map again

If they don't have the Iphone, they don't exist
Friday, 20 March 2009, 09:35

APPLE HAS DECIDED THAT TWO WESTERN EUROPEAN countries don't deserve to appear on the world map as they don't have access to the Iphone.

Iceland and Greenland were both conspicuous by their absence from the world map used by Apple execs to crow about the Iphone's world domination and the fact that the handset is now available in 80 countries at the recent preview of Iphone 3.0 software.

INQ reader Baldvin Mar Smárason, incensed that his country had been eradicated, told us, "Apple removed two countries from the world map in Iphone 3.0 promo. They removed both Iceland and Greenland from their world map so the map of Iphone availability would look better,' adding "They did this also when they launched IPhone 2.0."

Baldvin described the omission as "a really tasteless move," going on to remark that, "People in Iceland are really insulted."

We're not surprised. µ

Greenland

Is a tough one, part of the North American plate and a withdrawn member of the EU. So questionable as to whether it is Western European. Iceland is generally accepted as European although it is neatly bisected by the North American/European plate boundary.

I see....

They took Iceland out as they are now broke (banks all gone tits-up) and will not pony up the cash for the re-assuringly expensive crap. And noone lives in Greenland anyway... and if they do they would rather buy a Nokia and a PC and get a new snowplough with the change.

Re: I see...

I know:

Just shows how ignorant you are or how bad the news media you follow are, in fact a lot of people live in Greenland, how ever I am not sure most of them would need an i-phone, in fact they need food and better health care for infants. That country is often forgotten in media and mostly focused on "3rd world countries" in Africa and Asia. You should look up how incredibly tough survival is in Greenland right now and how the "big nations" are not helping out in any way or form.

As to Iceland, contrary to big media, it is not bankrupt. The fact that the former independant banks went bankrupt only led to the government seizing the banks and taking over, so the debt does fall on the country, but debts are easily paid off in a few years and stability is reappering on the market. Iceland has never become bankrupt since the Republic was founded and never will. Oh, and I can easily afford an iphone.

World Modified for Personal Preferance

No the reason is all wrong, look at the two maps, there are other countries other than Iceland in the original map that show [not red] no iPhone.

Greenland and Iceland looks to me was omitted in the original map for personal preference, just look at the aesthetic difference between the two maps.

Simple really, there was a time that I thought that Greenland was just plain ice floating on water. Now I know better.

Not only Iceland and Greenland

If you look carefuly to Central Europe, you'll find a small country, named Slovenia, that's also not member of the Holly Apple Alliance thought it is a valuable member of EU (also has the euro), NATO and what not...

Colorization issue

It appears that countries with negligible penetration are simply colored the same as the oceans. Look at Bolivia, it's also light blue. Greenland and Iceland are just unfortunate enough to be island, so they appear to disappear entirely. Apple probably should've just used some other color instead of making them sink into the ocean.

Some countries are weak on Geography

I wonder if it wassome local Californian Apple employee who thought it was the north pole and some island just off it, and removed it thinking that there was no point showing the north pole because you can't buy an iPhone there. Not unless you happen across some desperate beggar who's run out of food and heat and has resported to trading his possessions.

And don't mention that the north pole is on water otherwise Steve Jobs will try to walk on it at the next Apple launch...

Perfectly Reasonable

It's just Steve Jobs showing his legendary sense of taste. Admit it, the world does look cluttered with those extra little islands scattered about willy-nilly, with no sense to them. He was just tidying it up a little. The Apple version of the world looks so much cleaner, doesn't it?

Real reason

The real reason is very simple. Nobody in that so cold places wants a phone that cannot be used with gloves (or that needs expensive i-gloves exclusively sold in i-break-idiot-fanboys-pockets-shop). Who cares in that countries about an unusable phone out of home? So apple made a reasonable movement, "let's forget about those guys that don't appreciate our really almost reliable phone stuff".

Hey, but I'm sure that Apple has special plans to deliver the most of the new 17" inch toasters right there. Just to provide a good help to global warming and permafrost meltdown.

Oh well

I live in Greenland, and if you ask the people living here it sure is a country...

21st of may this year we went from home rule (which has been the form of domestic government since 1979) to a new form of government called Self government (or "Namminersorneq" in the language Kalaallit which is the main language spoken here)... One of the paragraphs in this new form means that the track towards being a fully independent nation now lies solely in the hands of the greenlandic people.

It is true that we are in some ways, mainly concerning foreign policy, still a part of Denmark, but to adress the subject in the article, Apple doesn't seem to think so. If you try to buy something from the Apple store you cannot choose Greenland, and if you choose Denmark there is no "sub-option" for choosing the county of Greenland which I guess would have been the way to correctly do it earlier if you didn't want to add Greenland as country.

A relatively large amount of people in Greenland use macs... Mainly because they are cooler which goes well with the weather :)

of course this "relatively large amount" doesn't amount to much as only 56.000 people live here, but it would be nice if we didn't have to phone a danish mac-shop every time we wanted to upgrade apple software...

For anyone wanting to know more about greenland, you can check out the self-government page in english here: http://uk.nanoq.gl/

...And for any flaws in my language, I am sorry, but please be lenient as english is only my fourth language (after Kalaallisut, danish and sign language) :)
