Dell pushes Imac-alike into the kitchen

Every working mom needs an all-in-one
Friday, 13 March 2009, 14:33

TAKING MORE THAN A FEW DESIGN CUES FROM APPLE'S IMAC, Dell has anounced the latest addition to its  Studio line, the all-in-one Studio One 19.

Momentarily forgetting that there is a world ouside of the good ol' U S of A, the PR bunnies at Dell decided to aim their press release at kitchen-dwelling "moms and their kids as they peruse photos from Spring Break".

Del-19

Don't they realise that to the rest of the world a spring break is something that happens if you sit down on the sofa too hard?

Anyway, the One 19's box is made from aluminium (not aluminum dammit) glass and fabric. Yes that's right. Fabric. In the kitchen. That's gonna look great spattered in waffle batter (sorry couldn't think of anything more American).

It also come in a number of colours (with a 'u') to match your drapes.

Starting at $699 (so that'll probably be £699 by the time it gets to Blighty, if it ever does) the 19 comes with a number of Intel CPU options ranging from a plain vanilla Celeron up to a Core 2 quad core. Graphics are covered by Nvidia in the form of either a Geforce 9200 or 9400.

Six USB ports, an unspecified slot-loading optical drive and a 7-in1 card reader come as standard, and you can add up to 4GB or RAM and up to 750GB of HDD storage.

Other add-on options include integrated wireless (!) a web camera, Blu-ray reader, touch-screen capability and facial recognition (if you forked out for the webcam). µ

Why the hate, Why the hate.

Overkill

Seriously, why would anyone need that much horsepower in the kitchen?

My wife uses an Asus EEEpc for looking up recipes. The whole unit resides on an old swing-arm style monitor stand. It's perfect, and much less expensive than this Dell.

why hate?

Why the stinginess? Why "optional" wireless?

Why the stinginess?

I don't need wireless, plus wired is faster anyways. Why spend $ for something I don't need? Paying more for wireless I don't need, is like spending more for a car with a V8 I don't need. I thought Europeans would understand that point of view. Oh, and I thought Americans were the ignorant ones for bashing the way other people speak and write. Guess not...

@mike

No it's just the English like to hate on everyone who has attempted to mess up our beautiful language, like the Yanks. And the Scots. And the Geordies....And the Scousers.....actually the English hate everyone who lives more than 20 miles from their castle. It's just a fact of life.

@Jester

shouldnt that be 32.18 kilometers from their castle?

I think the real reason they hate on us so much is because they're still bitter about the fact that they brought us here and we kicked their ass and took it from them...

...

Actually, I think its more. The UK brought us here and we kicked them out. that was along time ago and mostly off the minds of most people. Jump 200 years in to the future and you have a country which is pretty much the worlds biggest most influential power with very little responsiblity. Then we ship to europe our worst products, like mcdonalds and starbucks and keep the best stuff for ourselves. When things do make it there, its often times alot more expensive acounting for inflation.
And sure, I could have used words like colour and aluminium in school in protest, but I would surely still be in school if I had.

Pancakes dammit

Only speaking as a 'true child of the south'--pancakes are much more American than waffles.

not to mention...

...pancakes are better. Waffles mostly come from a cardboard box in the freezer, ick.

USA

I live here and dam proud of it - were one of the only countries that has guards on its borders to keep foreigners out, not its own citizens in - and we need them more than most because everyone wants to come here - id almost bet there are more ppl in the usa from every country in the world, than us citizens in their country from the usa - gee I wonder why
