I learn more about Nvidia's plans from the INQUIRER than I do from Nvidia - X-box developer
APPLE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED that it would be releasing version 3.0 of the Iphone operating system on March 17th but, as is the way of Jobs, no further details have been announced.

So here, in no particular order, and with no magical insight other than a big dollop of wishful thinking, is our list of predictions for OSX for Iphone 3.0:
Push notification *
Allowing third party developers to send updates through Apple servers
Flash support **
Mobile Internet with all the unnecesary bells and whistles
Better Bluetooth **
Proper support for BT peripherals including full sized keyboards for the fat of finger
Internet tethering ***
Use you Iphone as a modem
Copy and paste *
Come on Apple... this one is a no-brainer
Multi tasking *
Jumping between apps could be so much less painful
Horizontal keyboard on all apps **
See fat fingered comment above
Video recording ***
It's the 21st century... we want our pictures to move
Video conferencing ****
OK so the camera is on the wrong side... but it could work
Device wide search **
Spotlight for Iphone would be so useful
Support for software not approved by Apple *****
I want to install what I want... not what Steve allows me to
MMS ***
Not everyone has email on their phone
Turn by turn GPS **
We know it's do-able so why hasn't it been done?
THE INQUIRER PROBABILITOMETER
* Almost certain
** Quite likely
*** Don't hold your breath
**** Highly improbable
***** Not in this lifetime buddy
Only problem with your article is SMS, the iPhone has SMS, it doesn't have a forwarding function (why the bloody hell not I don't know), or MMS. but it does have SMS.
As a matter of interest (or just to start a fan boi war :)) what other phone has this many regular, well publicised updates?
This is pretty much the only thing that's held me back getting an iPhone. Having TomTom on my HTC TytnII (windows mobile) has been massively handy on numerous occasions. Yes you can get a dedicated unit but £100 or so, but I don't use it often enough to justify that and I've also used it while out and about with friends who don't have a dedicated unit.
We know TomTom have got their app working on the iPhone so why on earth not take advantage of it? Google maps is all well and good but for car sat nav its next to useless compared to propper turn by turn.
Now they have the problem of the HTC Touch HD and the Palm Pre which are probably going to get money instead.
I meant MMS. Thanks RichM
I meant MMS. Thanks RichM
Network operators do not want this, especially on unlimited data tariffs. Same goes for G1, they will not do tethering.
The G1 does tethering with root access, it also has copy/paste, and supports 3rd party apps. It also runs 6 applications at once (the OS was built for this), and video recording comes to the G1 in April, as well as on-screen keyboard :)
Flash support will most likely be pushed out to both phones from Adobe sometime this year.
Neither phone has turn-by-turn GPS right now due to licensing.
If you've got a jailbroken iPhone, there's a great tethering app avaliable in the form of PDA net:
http://www.junefabrics.com/iphone/index.php
Which (as of the latest version) now works over USB, allowing you to get around the issue of the iPhones rather poor battery life.
if this will be available for iPhone 3G? or, as I suspect, 2.2.x will be the last for it... thoughts???
Mark: Seen as this update is coming out in 4 days, I don't think Apple are going to release a new iPhone, update it to v2, then release this v3 update in that space of time, do you?
@RichM -- they are /not/ releasing the update in 4 days. They are giving a taster of things to come. Might wanna read the article before commenting chap.
Congrats Mark, made yourself look a right pleb.
"APPLE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED that it would be releasing version 3.0 of the Iphone operating system on March 17th"
*facepalm*
The more I look at the list of basic features missing from the iPhone, the more I wonder where the fanboiz get their grip on reality from!
Hell, half of these features are standard on phones I've long since retired to the "emergency" role (aka, given to my parents!)
Not hard to show you how many characters you've used. I don't want to be sending multiple texts or counting my characters manually.
too bad teathering doesn't work on the iphone without it being cracked.
Imagine if the iphone checked if the operator allowed teathering and enabled it when available instead of allowing Mr Jobs aka control freak to decide our fates.
On a side note it would be cool if the iphone could detect if you have a data plan/data option, saving people a few thousand dollars if they accidently used the internet. I know a phone can detect if call forward is enabled, so why not data plans?
I have a 6GB option that allows teathering. So I am waisting my money not being able to use how I want to use my data. Why is it fair Mr Control Freak gets to dictate how I use my devide just becuase he ate a rotten apple? What he trying to due? drive us all over to the G1 or blackberry? That will start to happen as the iphone magic dies down, and apple doesn't deliver what customers want.
Add this to your wish list:
*A way to save/download files from the webbrowser..
* Export/print a page to pdf/image
* bluetooth/network printing
I know the iphone allows screen shots, but those are only the image as it is on the screen and not the full zoomed image of the webpage. And screen shots are low DPI.
**the ability to install files over 10MB on 3G ffrom appstore.
on itunes.
When my SEK800i ended it's existence, I was looking for a device similar to iPhone, but running the M$ Mobile. So I started my little quest to find the best candidate. Samsung Omnia and HTC Diamond - both were great competitors but each of them had some tech-glitches, too small lcd or low battery life. There was Xperia and G1, but in the end I've chosen the iPple product. And that's very difficult for me to admit, because I'm Apple antagonist, I hate their evangelism, their marketing and glossy-glassy design. I work in publishing company and we have almost 600 Apple PC's in various colours and tastes. I'm very happy PC owner and I'm one of the few persons, who don't have to use Apple products @ work. I'm familiar with MacOs systems from version 9.X and I know their limitations and glitches, enought to say - I don't hate them, but I'm not buing all the crap they selling. And here comes iPhone. Friend of mine showed me his device, I played a little and then I started doing the research. I'm IT guy, I need to be online, use terminal services or ssh client, have access to irc, usenet, www. I don't need MMS, because I'm not a 16 yo. gal who wants to share panties photos, I don't need GPS and modem, because WiFi is m best friend. 3G is great feature but I turned it off and saved a lot of battery life (Edge is enough for me). I received 16G iPhone from my mobile network operator for less then 100 EU and have invested about the same amount in additional aplications, most of them not from iTunes. Yep, got my phone jailBreaked, because I needed horizontal sms with forwarding, advanced memory and partition managers, solid ssh client/server application, copy & paste function and many more features, Apple don't want me to have. Interface is fast, horizontal keyboard gives me comfort in pressing the keys with two hands. The biggest advantage of iPhone is the huge app library, filled with stupid and useless software for kids and well developed applications for people like me. Of course, I don't use only AppStore and iTunes, as I mentioned before, my device is loaded up with 3rd party software that extends It's capabilities, and that's the main reason why I own it. How it performs in real life? I use it about 5 h/d, with Wi-Fi enabled both home and work, calling, typing, connecting, running tasks, managing and converting files and listening to the music. Battery lasts for 2-3 days and that's quite ok for me.
I still don't like Apple, but I learned how to live & work with iPhone, the way it suits my needs. If any other device have such great capabilities let me know, I'll check it.

@RichM - Mark is correct. The article here is wrong. They are not releasing the update on March 17th.
Ars Technica were one of the few to get an invite, their own words...
"Apple has just sent out invitations to a special media event on March 17. The invite-only event is geared towards the new iPhone SDK, Apple says, and will give the media a "sneak peek" at the iPhone OS 3.0 software."
My Win Mobile based HTC Touch HD does all of that, and more.
Sorry Apple Fanboi's, keep on dreaming!
I have to admit. I was a Dell Axim user until not to long ego. While I liked the device I liked my previous Zarus much better. So in search of a new PDA I landed head and foot into the Apple camp. This is the best device that I have ever worked with by far. I can understand why we don't have copy and paste, but geeze, can't we have a button to switch from zoom to C/P? I'm sure apple can think of some inventive way to make this work. A good PDF reader. I have to reference DOT PDF docs on a regular basis, and while they work on the iPhone and the Ipod touch, I have yet to find a good application that would allow we to search through documents for terms and such. Some of the current viewers also run out of memory on large documents. These are two of the most basic things you might need in a PDA. Lets get it together guys.
@ijohn - Vindicated!
I am no longer "a pleb", well maybe a little one.
@richm - ha.
