MIT boffins building better batteries

20 second recharge

CederMIT BOFFINS HAVE COME UP WITH a new lithium ion polymer which can be used to make batteries which recharge in 10 to 20 seconds.

Prof Gerbrand Ceder (pictured) reckons the lithium ion phosphate prototype is capable of charging and discharging up to 20 times faster than cells currently on the market, and are subject to much lower levels of degradation.

The material is not new, but the way in which the lithium ions travel through the battery's microscopic tunnels has been greatly improved. µ

You need to bush up on you battery chemistry

Boffin, unlike standard Lithium Ion batteries like you might find in laptop or a RC car, lithium ion phosphate batteries were developed to be a safe alternative to standard Lithum Ion batteries and resist thermal runaway (i.e. They don't exploded), they are much safer and are primarily used in electric vichicles.

MIT Propaganda Machine

The conclusion of your article is simple: this guy just improved something that already existed before. And many other researchers will improve the product further. There is nothing wrong with that. What bothers me is that The Inquirer and other media outlets act as megaphone for the MIT propaganda machine.

Next time, see if there are similar developments going on in the UK or EU, report about those activities, and then mention MIT in the middle of the article, in a subordinate clause.

Old news

Actually, I've heard of this tech almost a year ago. It's based off of nano technology.

The capacity of the battery is much improved as well, previously at this capacity there were problems with the lithium swelling when it took a charge, the nano-structure increases the amount of 'void' providing room for expansion without changing the dimensions of the entire battery itself.

Interesting stuff, wouldn't be a bad tech to invest in.

Boffin I loved your comment it was great for a laugh. I get this mental image of all the scientists jumping up and down happily "we did it! we did it!" followed quickly by an external wide shot of the facility going up in a mushroom cloud. Classic.

Get the chem right

It's not lithium ion, lithium ion polymer nor lithium ion phosphate.

It's lithium *iron* phosphate. And it's not explosive.
