Intel is top chip shop again

AMD crashes out of top ten
Thursday, 12 March 2009, 11:03

CHIPZILLA STILL RULES THE ROOST when it comes to shifting silicon according to anal listers Isuppli. The biggest microprocessor maker on the planet managed to keep its spot at the top with a 13.1 per cent share of the global chip sales pie.

Intel's closest rival Samsung – despite suffering from the trials and tribulations of a difficult market for its bread-and-butter DRAM and NAND products – stayed in second place with a 6.5 per cent share.

With the global chip market shrinking by 5.2 per cent last year, there were always going to be some losers, most notably AMD which slipped out of the top ten (albeit into 11th place) with revenue dropping 7.8 per cent.

And Isuppli reckons that the overall picture points to smaller manufacturers making a better fist of keeping the cash flowing than the big boys.

Qualcomm was probably the standout performer raising its revenue by 15.3 per cent as a result of making major moves on the mobile phone market.
