Arctic blows in Germany

CeBit 2009 Fans and more fans
Wed Mar 11 2009, 17:13

ARCTIC COOLING HAD the usual array of CPU and GPU coolers at CeBit, and three things in the 'other' category. Those are PSUs, notebook coolers, and a USB fan.

Arctic_nc

Arctic NC notebook cooler

It seems like everyone is doing notebook coolers now, and the Arctic version is called the NC. It has a USB hub and a fan speed dial, not just a low/high switch.

Fusion_550r

Fusion 550R PSU

A little newer to Arctic is the Fusion 550R PSU. It is a 550W 80+ certified PSU, the twist here is the external fan. It has been done before, but it still turns heads. Not the start of a revolution, but still fun.

S1_s2_turbo

Accelero S1 Rev1 and S2 coolers

Getting back to what Arctic does best, we have GPU coolers, notably the S1 Rev2, an update to the Accelero S1, and the S2. Both are passive coolers, with four and two heat pipes respectively, and will take the 'turbo module'. No, it won't make the fins resonate at 6MHz, it will just add two fans should you need them. Both S1 and S2 have really nice fit and finish, they look good.

For lower end cards, you will probably want the Accelero L2 Pro. It is a GPU heatsink and fan with a ton of mounting holes. Basically, it should fit the board you have, but as always, check specifics before you buy.

Accelero_4870x2

Accelero Xtreme 4870X2

If your cooling needs are a bit more extreme, you might want to look at something like the Accelero Xtreme 4870X2. In case it is not blindingly obvious, this is an aftermarket cooler for 4870X2 GPUs. Three fans, eight heat pipes, and a clean look, not a bad package overall. It will be out in the near future.

Should you want something a little more out of the ordinary for your CPU, check out the Alpine 11 or the 11GT. They look disturbingly like a stock heatsink with a cool fan on them, but these two have the heatsink cut into an octagonal shape. It is different enough to register as 'neato' but not 'spiffy', for that it would need anodisation.

Arctic_breeze

Arctic Breeze

The last one scores high on the cuteness meter, the Arctic Breeze fan. Yeah, USB fans are an old trick, but this one is cute. Cute and has a long cord that coils up in the base. Make this in corporate colors, and they would make a dandy trade show giveaway.

Did I mention they are cute, get three for the girlfriend... or boyfriend. µ

external fan = bad the second

garacs1 yes, I have seen the grill - that does NOTHING to prevent cables from getting into the blades. And I know this type of fans. If there is anything close to them, their performance is down the sewer. Friend of mine has such an abomination and it sucks ass.

Seasonic makes

the PS then ships it to AC then AC slaps on a quiet fan from a previous overstock which could explain the decision to use external psu cooling - it was cheaper for AC. But at $95 USD the 550r ain`t cheap. At least it`s easier to replace the fan if it should fail ;)

PSU external fan

@ Steve and energyman:

Did you notice that the PSU external fan DOES have a fan-grill? Eventually, how many times have you heard of cables inside a closed computer case of "moving" around on their own, without external help (read that as hands)? HAving built hundreds of system, I never heard of such thing as cables getting tangled and even sucked into the PSU case by a fan applied externally to it. But hey, that's only my experience...

external fan = bad

the external fan is STUPID.

It takes away precious space
Cable love to get in the blades
And even if not - this kind of fan is VERY sensible to any distortion in or near its air stream - so no matterwhat you do, you always get diminished cooling. Oh - and if its defective (and AC fans love to die) you have to get an AC fan...

idiotic

External fan...

So the Fusion 550R PSU has an external fan... Guess they couldn't fit in inside with all the gubbins... Or have the designers never had that nasty noise from inside a case when a drive cable moves and catches the fan blades... Or worse jams them.

The Stench hits the Fan at CeBIT

What bothered me most at the CeBIT was the carcinogenic stench in-front and between the halls. Disgusting, no matter how many fans you use. CeBIT needs new management.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
