THE COVETED AWARD for dorkiest heatsink of CeBit has to go to MSI for their avant-garde creation called the P45D3. We normally reserve this award for Computex, a target-rich environment, but after seeing this board, a new version was called for.
P45D3 from MSI
The board itself is P45 based which means it is a good performer, overclocks well, and pretty stable. We have never used one, but there is no real reason to doubt that this is just a high-end P45 motherboard. The problem is the heatsinks.
Five copper scythes for the northbridge
Now, P45s are not the coolest chips in the world, but they are not Nvidia-class blast furnaces. MSI wisely(?) decided to put not one, but five heatpipes and fin-backed coolers on the northbridge. Just to make sure that any buyer knows this board means business, or in this case wouldn't be caught dead in one, they shaped them like little scythes.
With that, MSI wins the first annual(ish) dorkiest heatsink of CeBit. In just over a month, we will see if they can repeat at Computex, but as always, the competition is fierce at that show.
Should you have the need to cool a 200W northbridge, this is your board. µ
Clearly CD has no style. Charlie don't surf.
Well if you buy a mobo for style, you get what you pay for I guess. For average people, that fancy crap is probably not worth it.
"but they are not Nvidia-class blast furnaces."
This comment shows clearly even more how bias he is. Someone please explain why this douchebag is still employeed by you? I own several NForce based machines and they are not blast furances, hell, they aren't even close to being micro heaters.
@ Logan26, Obviously you have never come across a faulty NVidia GPU then that have been plaguing computers world wide for the last 6 months or so.
One of the symptoms is a massive amount of heat. NVidia blast furnaces is putting it mildly!
you do realize this board has been on the market for more than a year now in retail shops... what's new?
@ Nick Dude, first get a clue. He was talking about comparing stand alone NB and SB chipsets, not intergrated video based NBs. Second, the massive problem is in the laptop sector, not desktop and has to due largely with a combined oopps from OEms and Nvidia. Nvidia for setting cooling standards to low and OEM then going even further by making fan speed slower than they should be. Again, you can not compare a desktop NB without vgu to all-in-1 laptop solutions, which you are clearly doing, as was nitwit CD. Again, proud owner of 3x 680i's and 2x 650i's without an issue.
Why do you u associate hot with bad? my 650 nb hs is way too hot to touch. but it doesn't half take a shit load of volts. which is good.
Don't really care how it looks... or if it looks 'dorky'. Does it work better? Does it give you a better OC? Does it lower system (or chipset) temps? Does it negatively interfere with air flow for other cooling? Does it impact what type of COU cooler you can use?
I know this website is more about style over actual substance, but could you at least make a note of how it performs and occasionally give a small nod to performance and substance?
Nvidia chipsets... board for board do run hotter than any other chipset... this is a fact since nforce3s mate...
you cant cook an egg on 1 though... unless you fit a 'special' attachment (codenamed fry1ng pan) ;)
CD has a point logan. the 680/650 were pretty hot. i know cause i had a 650i constantly at 55C with a fan on the heatsink. the 7XX series are even worse with the heat. look up some reviews. comparatively intel and amd have consistently kept lower heat output in their chipsets.
Did you read the title of the article? It's an article specifically about the style of this unit. If you want a review, read a review on it. That was not the intent.
That's like reading an article about exploding batteries and bitching at the author because they didn't go into details on how long said battery would last on a charge. It's not the point.
