Youtube talks with PRS break down

Thousands of videos unplugged
Tue Mar 10 2009, 09:59

TALKS BETWEEN VIDEO STEALING (sorry... streaming) service Youtube and the Performing Rights Society (PRS) have broken down leading to the shutting down of thousands of music videos.

Two years ago Google struck a deal with the organisation – which dishes out royalties paid by pubs clubs and gyms among others – to legally stream over 10 million videos for an undisclosed sum.

That deal has now expired and Youtube bigwig Patrick Walker is telling anyone willing to listen how unfair the PRS is being over renewing the deal.

Patrick-walker

"There are two obstacles in these negotiations." he said in his bog. "Prohibitive licensing fees and lack of transparency. PRS is now asking us to pay many, many times more for our licence than before. The costs are simply prohibitive for us - under PRS's proposed terms we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback. In addition, PRS is unwilling to tell us what songs are included in the license [sic] they can provide so that we can identify those works on Youtube – that's like asking a consumer to buy an unmarked CD without knowing what musicians are on it."

Walker says that Youtube is still working with PRS in an effort to reach "mutually acceptable terms" for a new licence, but until this happens it will be blocking premium music videos in the UK that have been supplied or claimed by record labels.

"This was a painful decision," said Walker, "and we know the significant disappointment it will cause within the UK. And to be clear, this is not an issue with the record labels, with most of whom we have strong relationships."

In an effort to further monetise the world's most popular web site, Youtube has recently added click-through purchasing of music tracks and videos, so we're not quite sure why the PRS is causing such a fuss.

In other unrelated Youtube news, the Bangladeshi Government has blocked access to footage of Prime Minister Shekih Hasina being brutally jeered by soldiers. The military was up in arms about a decision by the Government to negotioate with mutineers whose actions had left 70 dead. µ

"profiteering corporate machine manages to destroy the freedom that is youtube"

This is hillarious. The Performing Right Society is a NON PROFIT MAKING organisation that represents Songwriters. Youtube is owned by GOOGLE, a billion dollar profiteering corporate machine !

Get yer facts straight!

license

There is no [sic] required for the word 'license', as that is the correct spelling for the country where the quote, speaker, and company originated.

p.s. ...which reminds me. There is no such thing as Nasa. It's NASA.

and the point is?....

if the profiteering corporate machine manages to destroy the freedom that is youtube then, like many other things it will just be driven underground.
the people of the world will continue to view moving pictures so what is the point?
the same happens with sites that stream movies. they get shut down and others crop up.
if there is a demand then these things will happen - despite the desires of the rich and greedy elite.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
