THE UK government's nanny state information arm, the Department of Health, has wasted taxpayers money on an advertisement linking the playing of videogames to an "early death".
The Change4Life campaign is backed by The British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research and Diabetes UK. The advert shows a child sitting holding a PlayStation controller, accompanied by the slogan: "Risk an early death, just do nothing."
While the advert is supposed to get kids off their fat arses and move about a bit, linking video games to an early death by laying about is a bit harsh.
The games Industry.biz points out that the Government's Byron Review said that there was no evidence to link obesity to videogames. It is just an easy target. µ

Why not advertise that sitting at a desk doing home work could kill you?
How many jobs do you sit and just move your hands?
This one FAILS horribly, poor people of the UK and their money.
Well,
The commonest places to drop dead are in the bog (while taking a dump), and in bed (either while sleeping or trying to get out of bed).
Presumably if we avoid these places we will be immortal.
"Risk an early death, just do nothing."
should read:
"want to blame your kids poor health on someone other than yourself and your lazy parenting? just do nothing, we will blame video games for you!"
This is one TV spot in a series of ads, and you single it out for -- ooh, singling out one pastime for criticism.
Interesting, except for the fact that the campaign does not single out gaming: it's one of many other inactive pastimes addressed by the campaign.
Hah! The ugly, fat, arrogant American is laughing at this display of waste.
What you guys need to do is get a media savvy personto run your country, tell everyone the sky is falling down and push through the single largest spending bill in history and follow it up with a budget proposal that spends 50% more money than you take in (to most that's not a 'budget', that's a spending plan). The economic recovery act will of course contain highly critical components like STD education ('cause that obviously creates jobs), money for anti-smoking campaigns (another job creator), and a requirement to convert all medical records to electronic ones (obviously another job creator). All stuff that could be put into a budget, but hey, why wait when you've scared the people, don;t want to actually debate the programs, and have billions in waste to get to in the budget proposal - this is called getting a jump on things.
An advertising campaign on obesity and video games? Hah, even Aaahaanold is laughing at this puuuunnny excuse of what you call waste (and he runs a state 40Bil in debt!)
as mentioned above, maybe they should stop paying people to advertize rubish and subsidize sports centers. I went up to one that opened up the road, it was a revamped old one (they just painted the building bright yellow) and they wanted £40 for an hour on a badminton court...
that will pay for the first two parts and 2 months play on warcrack. i wonder why we are getting fat?
You can also suffer a sudden death if you keep reading the Inq. :D
... and so can sitting on your arse doing a desk job all day. But that's society that takes advan ... uhm benefits from that, so we'll just sweep that under the rug shall we?
Again another wasted campaign (- money) making tenuous links.
Have a look at competetive gaming and you'll see a daily schedule includes weight and cardio workouts. OK...so perhaps this is aimed at the general populous...but then...all the gamers I know work hard and exercise regularly.
With the advent of the Wii Fit how on earth can they (government) claim that gaming is bad for you?
Adrenaline kicking in too much whilst gaming? You get used to it and it doesn't occur very often after the initial newbie mode runs off. If not then it is quite likely one is dispositioned to getting excited about many things other than gaming and should not necesarrily base such experiences on the general population.
Ok I can live with that, however aren't you supposed to do a few hours of heart raising activity every week? Anyone here done any competitive gaming...that IS heart raising activity. Linking computer games to an early death is a little extreme. The more games you play, the less you're affected by chemical issues anyway because you get used to the fact the big bad guy is on a screen, not actually going to kill you, sometimes it can get stressful (and I think all motion sensing controllers should be able to turn the game difficulty down if it detects it's been thrown at something/someone) however, it's entertainment. Adrenaline junkies haven't died from being hyped up on adrenaline, so there goes the chemical idea really. It's just the inactive lifestyle that people live anyway which is a bit like saying jumping off a cliff may be dangerous, possibly fatal...it's the government proving it has a GCSE in stating the obvious and trying to prove we have no common sense.
I tell ya, it's synthetics that are killing us.
From everything to lies, to synthetic designer drugs, to refined food, to fiction, to anime, to fake sex (pr9n) to all the other illusions.
Aye it'll kill us all!
I'm a STEAM Player myself.
Pretty obvious to anyone with a reasonable amount of working brain cells that sitting in front of a computer playing a game where you get excited and your adrenalin pumping is going to give your body stress and no doubt some long term ill health if you do it too much.
Adrenalin is designed to aid your flight away from a predator.
There has been countless studies on the effects of this chemical in the work environment where people sit at a desk all day and get all heated up and emotional over something.
It's known to cause ill health and this fact isn't disputed.
Playing a computer game is not like watching TV. Has anyone experienced the same level of excitement playing a game like you do when watching TV? No.
Whilst a young person's body may be able to easily shrug off these chemicals I'd like to see the results of a study of people over 40 years old.
I bet it shows damage.
Eating food could kill you.
And genetically modified food also approved by our "beloved" governments. Than we'll lose weight.
Brainwashing BS...
And genetically modified food also approved by our "beloved" governments. Brainwashing BS...
Then TV shows can kill you too.... But you wont see that advertised on TV. Wathing tv shows is actually worse than gaming. At least you move your hands and arms while gaming ;-P And you use your brain. Not like TV shows.
I think thats the last time I will donate to charities that waste money on crap like this.
If the government wants people to get fitter, they should subsidise sports facilities and advertise the fact.
But then again, most local authorities and councils are so badly run without an ounce of business acumen that they can't even run a sports centre at a profit.
So the main cause of obesity is government inefficiency, be it local or central, combined with a demonstrable lack of business skills.
Freddy Goodwin could even probably manage to run a sports centre at a profit and he is crap with *other peoples* money.
